if effectively playing the ptd version ( aka the one you can't buy anymore ) ( the one true dark souls )

then you can do whatever
those servers are in valve controll ( bandai shut them down a good long time ago and valve repurposed it into steamworks because the game still had sales going for it )
all they do is govern matchmaking, they care none for the rest ( cheaters and such can run rampant in ptd.... which is why watchdog was made etc )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if you are here by accident and own the REMASTER
then don't

those servers are in bandai controll and have nothing to do with the ptd version
they are governed by the same systems that "protect" ds2 and ds3
and they softban for the smallest of alterations :)

in an attempt to not make assumptions on which version you own ( since it's not a default guarantee anymore )
use this wisely :)

The mouse icon next to the name indicates if you own the game on that particular profile.

that is a great question ?
and i have no clue

i'd assume they just see out of place enemies since they get a display of your overworld on their end ?
( whatever is drawn for you is drawn for them, with some stock multiplayer delay... but the same none the less )

if this were to be concidered "cheating" ( which i wouldn't categorize it under ) at worst it say it's an interesting experience for the invader :p

if you invade someone who is infected by a gravelord then you also see black phantoms that are specific to that person... ( last i remember, it's been a long time ) makes sense it would portray itself in the same way

For further reference, if you want to mod later Dark Souls games, that have a ban system ;
As long as you're offline, they don't care.

they technically also don't ban the game
they ban the account holder ( ip-bans can't be justified propperly )

if you "cheat" then do just make an alt account
any alt account on the same pc can play the same games providing they are already installed

if you get softbanned over it, it's only going to affect that one account
while your main will still have full acces

ofcourse this in itself does not justifiy outriight "cheating" :)

nor is torrent justified :)
( i can fuly get behind the "don't pay bandai, because half of what they receive they don't desserve.... yet it's till a crappy practice to torrent things )

illegal aquiring ( although never prosecuted ) only enters a grey area if at one point you OWNED the game itself ( theoretically.. they will all yell "illegal", but in a lawsuit ( whcih will never happen ) you have a good defence going )

for instance emulation !

roms in themselves fall under illegal distribution ( agian, other then nintendo noone really cares since they don't even produce 2005 gamecube games anymore )
but if you owned a gamecube and let's say pokemon stadium back then

then an "illegal" rom in itself is "grey" enough to become "acceptable"
when you buy something, you have a license to USE said ip ( you can make copies of it for USE and backup purposes )

you just can't distribute it yourself
now ripping a disk YOU OWN and putting it into an ISO isn't distributing, it's only changing media.... there is nothing wrong with that
and if you OWN the original, then who is to say you didn't do it just like that :-)

only if at one point you owned the original though, and ONLY FOR PERSONAL USE! :)

--------------------
loaning a game ( on hardcopy - for instance dark souls to be more on topic ) from your "friend" is also ILLEGAL

you ard your friend acted in "distribution" with the result that bandai can no longer sell to you

................. just to showcase how strict it all is
you are telling a 10 year ( example age ) old he can't share his favorit game with his best friend ??
really now :p

inb4 thread locked.
other then the " go to torrent " comment in here
there is nothing that is out of bounds or promoting malpractices

it's all public information :)
