If you care about mods, get the PTDE, there some very good ones that change the gameplay in very interesting ways, but you'll have to deal with the fact that no amount of mods can completely fix the poor port they gave us, even though they help a lot in making it look and feel like an actual pc game;

if you don't care about mods, want good performance and a smooth experience, just get the remaster instead.

a bit exaggarated, there IS some polish in DSR making it nicer but also some little things making it worse.
If you don't mind setting things up with mods then it's hard to say DSR is better than PTDE though

Having played BOTH, I can tell you, the Remastered version is by far the more playable version.

Look, even if you set aside graphics, there is one feature that sets it apart from PTDE: item stacks.

In the original, you can't use item stacks. Oh, you want to improve your standing with the Darkmoon covenant, to get your Darkmoon Blade maxed out? Have fun watching the same animation 80 (yes, 80!) times while you make your offering to the convenant one, single item at a time.

I actually use the covenants, now that you can offer item stacks!

The PS3 version also has areas that run like utter crap. You're basically asking us, "should I drive a bicycle with fully inflated tires, or a bike that has the tires deflated?" Sure, it's servicable and will work to a point, but why would you do that to yourself?

Remaster is technically (meaning, from a technical, performance standpoint, you plebs) superior to PTDE. And, unless your PS3 is jailbroken, you can't mod it.

Performance-wise, it's hard to say the opposite though: PTDE struggles to reach stable 60 fps even on powerful hardware (not to mention it needs dsfix to remove the 30 fps lock, introducing framerate-related glitches), while the remaster can even on poor hardware, without the framerate glitches

Decide for yourself. I believe broad sweeping changes to the lighting without consideration to the intricacies of individual areas has ruined the game graphically or at least sent it backwards.

It really depends on your own preferences; console vs pc. And then again on your knowledge and hardware (pc).

If you are a console player go console, if a pc player go remaster and if you're a "tweeker" and/or like modding go ptde.

Console aside, for a pc version it really depends what you will get from the game. Another "step" in the series then it has to be remaster, but if you are like most people on this forum then there is something about this game that holds your interest and you play well beyond one or two cycles and in that case ptde offers more versitility albeit at a cost of some technical "expertise" or "messing around" to achieve the desired effect(s).

yeah that's true and Harrison has a point too with item stacks, new bonfire options and especially red soapstone summon with boss dead.

But some things are worse IMO - especially, due to the hype, more cheaters but without the means/mods you have with PTDE. You're supposed to rely on the authorities...to get banned either innocently or unjustified.
I think you will find less annoying twinks/cheaz in PTDE but that's just assuming, though.

Playing it for the first time, if you're fine with checking and adjusting a lot (and having decent hardware I guess) I'd tend to prefer PTDE.
But I also can't agree with the bad reviews for DSR

I don't know much aboout DSPTDE. I only have 800+ on it.
I can tell you this. PS3 version is out of the plate. It has problems, no DLC included which are pretty good. Also PvP and summoning will be very limited and soon to die (if it hasn't).
For remastered or PTDE you will need a controller. I use the Xbox360 and it works great as it is the same mapping. A logitech had the buttons moved by 1. You can get used to it, but it is annoying.
The choice between Prepare to Die Edition (PTDE) and remastered will be whether you like to mod it or not. My modded PTDE looks better than remastered in some areas, but remastered also added some things I can't mod.
Modding in itself is not hard too. Install DSFix, also get Wulf Connectivity.
As for the mod themselves this list is pretty good
https://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls/mods/top/
I would not install all, but definetively I would do the texture pack, high res Fonts, Flora Overhaul. The texturepack has a lot of other mods into one. That pack alone will limit how many mods you can put.

As for the frame rate issue. What I suggest is do not pass 60 fps. I like to set mine to 57 or 59. in 60 you could fall down on ladders, pass thru walls and other bugs. 60 seems to be the breaking number. But really anything between 45 and 59 will be fine.

If you don't want to bother, or take advantage of the gameplay changes then remastered. Not all textures were upgraded though, but it has better multiplayer and the base player for PTDE has dwingled quite a bit (but still plenty of players)

Unfortunately no version has cross platform, so now we have 6 different user base. Xbox 365 and PS3 though are almost non existent.
PC PTDE has an advantage. The DSM converts dark souls from P2P to dedicated server (kind of) so we should always have PvP as long as someone is willing to host a server.
i can check tonight how many players are. The program will try to match you with the 20 closer to your SL (number can be increased of decreased)

Poor wording choice maybe, but you really don't need a controller; you can play with keyboard and mouse and it's just as good, with the right mods, or even without mods if you play with keyboard only.
