You mean fighting him legit? Avoid lock-on at all costs... and that's it, other than that you just dodge and hit as usual. His attacks are very slow, so when he does his overhead smashes you can just move out of the way. His horizontal attacks need to be dodged though (or blocked, if you can). Be careful when he does his flaming tentacle smash, since it seems it has some fire AOE around the area where it hits, and don't get too far or he'll just start spamming his long range fire attack at you, and getting caught in that is pretty bad.

I got caught in his fire splash in NG, he would stop spamming that same attack, he did that until he died

Just go from where you got the Gold-Hemmed Black Set and run straight to the fog door. Even if he hits you, don't stop and keep running. Try to take the shortcut and not the long waya round. Stand as closest to the fog door as you can. If you do right, he'll try to grab you there, fail and get stuck trying to hold on to the ledge. Hit his hand enough times and he'll fall and die. This is not a glitch, but actually programmed, intended behaviour in the game, btw.

Exclusively works when you grab the equipment; if you die/quit the fight this will not work.

You can get him to take out his tentacle again if you go back to where you picked up the gold-hemmed set... you'll probably still get roasted a few times trying to get there though

Go into the cove and bait out attacks from the first entrance. It takes a long while, but it works and it's most reliable way to do it. Just make sure you roll for every attack and that you're out of way, as the hit box is wonky.

Baiting a specific move due to area location=/=utilizing a built-in ez win. If you don't get the quick win on the first try, you have to go through the fight normally.

I don't get it, how is it any different? Getting his tentacle out is required in order for him to jump at you at the fog gate, because that's what he uses to grab the ledge; getting the quick win is not limited to the first time you pick up the set.

Yes. It is. He does not jump if you reenter the boss fog any time after you've grabbed the set. He will just attempt to attack you from afar. I would know.

No, I'm 100% sure I got him to do that a few times. There are also several videos showing the quick kill after a death:

You gotta run ALL THE WAY back to the altar where you picked up the set, make sure he pulled the tentacle out, then back at the start.

There is more than just this one ez scripted way here. In the narrow passage behing the giant rock one can also easily bait his tentacle slam attack and mutilate the tentale, repeatedly. The only problems are:
- he may actually stuck the in his "whiping out the tentacle" amination there, endlessly
- his tentacle may not stay on the surface and just sink in the ground
- he may smack one through the rock so best avoid hugging to it
- he may go nuts and start to spam his fiery tentacle, the one tha causes the AoE fire blow which also goes through the rock
other than that it works ;)

yeah, you can still get meme'd in several ways trying to cheese it like that, but it's fairly consistent all things considered

Run all the way back to the fog gate after he becomes hostile and he'll jump to his death.

What a terrible oversight.
