how can people say that dark souls 2 and 3 are the hardest when in dark souls 1 you can't even roll towards the direction you're aiming to?

1) Play with no lock-on
2) Enjoy omnidirectional rolling

Spawn the witch let her take care of it

If you can't beat the butterfly, you're kinda bad at it. Just use a magic resistant shield and your estus should last through her attacks until you kill it.

That's a dumb suggestion, especially since you're not going to be facing the enemy if you don't use lock on, which is kinda what you need if you're trying to block.

Having a 4 direction roll when locked on in ds1 is an OBJECTIVELY bad thing when compared to ds2 and ds3. You can't just say "don't use it"....

It's not dumb at all, if you're trying to dodge. That's more general advice rather than boss specific... I agree that on this boss it's better to just lock on and keep your shield up most of the time.

DS 1 is the easiest of the 3 but also not as easy to get in to if you haven't started out with it. It's a strange beast but it is what it is.
With regards to the butterfly - Pyromancy / sorcery / bows can hit him while flying but you must be carefull with his attacks. they hurt quite a lot ...
Melee: Go through your stack of useless shields till you find the one with the highest amount of Magic Resistance - keep it up and also keep some humanity in your pocket incase you run out of estus.
Estus: you can kindle bonfires to gain 10 sips instead of 5.
NPC: the witch solos the butterfly, if you are truely stuck use her.

DS1 is ARGUABLY the easiest because it hasn't got that much in the way of artificial difficulty, and thanks to its enemy types, equipment and pacing you don't technically need a lot of reflex and skill to beat it - you can substitute it with patience and willingness to learn.

Experience in the soulslike genre also plays a role.

Wait for the Remaster so you and 4 or 5 friends can chug your way past it. You're the Remaster's player base so you'll do fine in it.

Something DS3 doesn't seem to make the player learn as carefully: COME BACK WHEN YOU'RE STRONGER.

And ignore @rses like Apathy, if you want a summon there's usually someone on the forums here ready to help. You can do this alone though. You may just not have good enough gear or stats to make it feasible for a newb.

How to EASILY defeat the Moonlight Butterfly by StarryShaw:

Step 1: Get to the forest area, past the stone guards
Step 2: Make a cup of Coffee
Step 3: Light up your cigarrete (totally optional)
Step 4: Summon Witch Beatrice
Step 5: Cross the fog gate
Step 6: While you drink your Coffee (and smoke, probably) roll to your left or to your right a few times, depending on the situation
Step 7: Profit

I didn't even know it was possible to die at this boss until I did an SL1 run.
GregHouse! Apr 5, 2018 @ 8:41pm
The NPC summon will win the fight for you. Summon her. She wins 100% of the time this fight without assistance. So just hide in the corner while she kills the boss for you.

If you need help with Pinwheel there is a summon that can kill him for you too without your help 100% of the time.
