Lore question regarding death in this game
So, in Dark souls, if you die, the bon fire 'summons' you back to it and heals you under it's light before you respawn, if I understand this correctly. However, if this is acurate, one thing that's been on my mind.

I don't recall seeing a single piece of food in the game, and all of the hollow look like they're starving. So, what happens if you die of hunger/thirst? Does the bonfire still heal you and bring you back, but ar eyou still hungry (liek the future in chrono trigger)?

If it doesn't restore you, wouldn't you just die again and again at the bon fire?

Also, what happens to your body after you die that you'r ejust a blood stain? wouldn't it be possible to just 'drown' the enemy in your corpses, if nothing else?

I know the game and the players take the lore seriously, and these questions have been on my mind lately, was just wondering.

Hollows are generally incapable of eating or digesting food. There are item descriptions in Dark Souls 3 (and maybe one, can't remember) about how some undead might miss having excrement (dung pies, stalk dung pies, and excrement-covered ashes). However, there are some workarounds. Estus is obviously drinkable, and a certain character in Dark Souls 3 has figured out how to make a soup out of it, as well as a drink. There are also a few items that are used by eating them throughout the series, like green blossoms and bug pellets.

you're alredy dead...undead...obviously.
All you can do is gain back resemblance of you former self and strength (or potential) by using stolen pieces of souls and humanity.
When u die u get temporarily hollow-undead, creeping back towards the latest bonfire (if you wish to continue the adventure...if not you become one of the mobs...that's what I imagine) leaving behind a bloodstain of your soul/humanity collection

Et voilà, bon appetit. It's food. http://darksouls.wdfiles.com/local--files/enemies/butcher-large.jpg
I'm not sure who the meat is for, though.

Alot is unclear about the Souls lore, and I think that is only for the better. I interpret it like this:

I think because you are Undead, in a sort zombie-like state, that you don't have to eat to survive. As Playerjjjj said, digesting food is not something an Undead can do anymore. Undead can 'live' for a long time (if not forever?), and only will go Hollow when they lose their purpose.
Humanity is like a state opposite of being Hollow, wherein being human you have a greater purpose than just being.

I'm not sure if Estus itself is food, since living people don't seem to like it. It could be some sort of essence of the bonfire, since it refills at a bonfire (and when someone kindles one). Why it was made into soup in 3, I don't know.

The Darksign you are branded with transports your being back to the bonfire you linked last with. The bonfire's essence/warmth heals you.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Butchers. And of course there are plenty of enemies throughout the series who do their best to eat you alive, but that might be more out of malice than hunger.

But what would happen if an undead lost an arm/leg after a fight and didnt die?
After dying, he would appear with it again or without it?
We can see that something similar happens in ds2 with Vengarl, can't understand how dismembering actually works with the undeads.

Ahhh, thank you, havne't play DS3 yet (can't afford it, lol), so I was wondering regarding that. I only assmed people did eat due to the dung pies, as there needs to be something consumed and a working digestive tract in ordr to produce that.

I think that's one of my biggest problems with dark souls 2, emenies stop spawning. It would have bene fine is more hollowed undead starting showing up somewhere else, but when they stop spawning, it seemed to kill the lore. Also, all the undead look hungry, like they're constantly starving.

So, then, if nito is first of the dead but he still lives, and he's not undead, why did he come back? is it soley due to the great soul? Also, since we see in game that you can 'consume' souls, why can't teh undead souls be consumed? Is it more that 'it's not the body that's immortal', but the soul that's immortal? So, some enemies, mainly the bosses, have giant, poewrful souls, but those souls can be destroyed, and the undead have weaker souls that are everlasting?

Nito is a god of death, but he does have a soul. Most of it is offered to death by himself, though.

Also, souls are not consumed, but kept. See it as treasure. A soul from a Lost Undead is only worth so much, where a soul of a Lord of Cinder is worth more.
Only Firekeeper souls have Humanity in them, and seem to be able to be consumed (not sure if that is a localization error). When you 'bind' one to yourself, you will get Humanity from them. That is because Firekeepers themselves are filled with Humanity when linked to a bonfire.

Also, Dark Souls 2 was not helmed by the original director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. It was a bit different in gameplay and the game's lore was written and implemented by another team. That resulted in some things being changed. That's when you get things like NightmareGats mentioned, with dismembered Undead and non-respawning enemies like you said.

This reminded me of my joke-post where I was saying if you were an undead chef and I went on and on about all the edible enemies in this game like the boars and hydras. I tried finding the post but I couldn't. If anyone can find it do me a favor and necro it, you guys will love it.
