Greathammers are known to be popular weapons for paladins/str-fth builds but there's only one paladin-esque greathammer in the game and it's only obtainable after you place the lord vessel, travel deep in the Catacombs and kill Paladin Leeroy for it. Dark Souls 1 should have had a weapon like the Great Mace in dark souls 3.
- Divine Weapons
- Occult Weapons
- Regular weapons buffed with appropriate miracle.
In general if you select the right weapon it will *always* be stronger than the other two, and when buffed even only semi-appropriate weapons will be significantly stronger (but you can only use a Faith based weapon buff once per attunement slot per rest).
Occult weapons cause bonus damage to 'holy' enemies, so basically if something is clearly related to the gods i.e. is a divine knight it will deal extra damage to them. Those enemies are fairly strong but also rare outside of specific locations.
Divine Weapons find a lot more use because they deal extra damage to skeletons and cause respawnable skeletons to stay dead after just one death (until you rest at a bonfire and they respawn the way any other enemy would), making them quite useful overall. They also deal the same rough damage as Occult Weapons but tend to be just a little superior.
Anyway, quick recommendations :
- Keep a weapon to deal with skeletons and/or benefit from your Faith and a weapon to buff (on the Normal upgrade path).
- Some good strength weapons to buff include Man-Serpent Greatsword, Battle Axe, Butcher Knife, Reinforced Club, Large Club, Great Club, Dragon Tooth, and pretty much any Greataxe or Ultra Greatsword that is normally upgradable (though those have slow swing speed especially if used one handed). In all honesty, if you're going to buff a weapon it's a good idea to pick those with faster swing speed over the higher damage ones because you will be getting more out of your buff.
- Some good divine (or occult) weapons can also be found in the above list. If used for killing skeletons, blunt weapons work particularly well so Reinforced, Large and Great Club reappar. You can select pretty much any weapon you like that has decent scaling potential and make it Divine however, as from that point on it will use your faith far more than your strength and dex.
Also, there's a weapon you can get by buying it form a certain NPC when they become a merchant or killing them before they do called Crescent Axe. It has the divine auxillary effect and pretty good physical and overall damage, easily negating the need for a regular Divine weapon. However, its physical scaling is almost even between strength and dexterity so it may not be as good on your build as it was on mine.
It's worth noting Grant is ridiculously heavy for its damage potential and at 30 faith you can cast WoTG yourselves. A lot of people either hate Grant or adore it, but there's not a lot of middle ground.
It's about sending a message.
In all seriousness, having gone to the end with a STR/FTH build myself, I have had a pretty poor time in PvP and PvE relative to a pure melee / sorcerer / DEX/INT hybrid, but to answer your question I have had the luck to two-shot most of the guys that invade me with the Great Club +15 buffed with Sunlight blade. Turns every boss into sizzling mush, too. It hits hard, *decent* moveset, and can really shine if you can kite your enemy in a corridor in PvP.
