... but you should play them in order.
As is, though... it seems like characters from Londo (ds1) visited Dragnelic (sp?) (ds2) and vice versa, but there's no real overreaching storyline connecting the two beyond that.
And, of course, some people are claiming that Bloodborne is also connected to DkS1.
Imma explain to you this, really short but at the same time really informative:
Dark Souls: Look, some ♥♥♥♥♥ found them soul, and realized that his hommies found dem too, and dem soul give dem power, so all dem go fight dem dragons and they win. So there's a campfire that's like dying for some reason, so the sister of the group that was a pyromaniac throw some kesosene to the fire and bum!, dem demons, dem spider with tiddies and all that ♥♥♥♥, so the first ♥♥♥♥♥ called Guin wich was something like a King go there and throw himself to the campfire, but he gone crazy and ♥♥♥♥ and the camfire is dying again but my ♥♥♥♥♥ don't wanna leave so you have to go to kick his ass, but he's locked by a fancy door that opens with dem souls of the other ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that found dem souls too. The end.
Dark Souls II: This game happens in another place, so, there was a ♥♥♥♥♥ in the first game called Manus, that ♥♥♥♥♥ crazy, so you kill him and his soul shatters in 4 pieces, and dem pieces become some hot woman for some reason, wich all marry some fancy kings and ♥♥♥♥. So you have to go, to do something I'm not really sure, ahh yeah, stop the curse, so for that you have to talk to my ♥♥♥♥♥ Vendrick, that he was retired to some spiritual ♥♥♥♥ in some fancy cementery and when you go find him he's trippin naked with a sword. So you have to kill 4 powerful ♥♥♥♥♥♥ here too, that are reincarnations of the first ♥♥♥♥♥♥ of the first game for some reason. So you kill them all. Then you go collect some crowns. Then you stop the curse. Then you go kill Vendrick's ♥♥♥♥♥ because she totally crazy. In the second version some dude that looks like a giant face with dreadlocks appear for some reason, and throws fire. The end.
Dark Souls III: This happens in the same place as Dark Souls I, but 20 years later, so everything is changed. So here this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ wanna do a reenactment of the first linking of the fire, for that they need 5 ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to sit on some fancy chairs, but dem ♥♥♥♥♥♥ busy, so you have to go and kill them all. So the legend says that when some dude links the fire may or may not survive the process (that's new) some in those 20 years it's supposed that only 5 dudes survived and you have to make them all sit and drink tea, there's already one ♥♥♥♥♥ with no legs that's already there and he's totally ok with everything. So again you have to go kill 4 dudes. So you go, and it's like, hollow, then some crabs, then some skeletons and then hollows again. There's a DLC where you go to Antartica, I don't know much about it because I just bought the Season Pass on Friday so I can't really tell you much about it. The end.
That's about it. There are some crucial parts that I ignored, specially the ones where you travel trough time, because there the timeline gets ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
