Need help with DSfix
So after fooling around with DSfix for an hour and half more or less and having the game still end up crashing except when I disabled DSfix I'm checking the settings on by one and the main problem is render and display settings. I use :

# internal rendering resolution of the game
# higher values will decrease performance
renderWidth 640
renderHeight 480

# The display width/height
# 0 means use the same resolution as renderWidth/Height
# (use for downscaling - if in doubt, leave at 0)
presentWidth 800
presentHeight 600

Somehow those 2 make the game crash even though I know this is the lowest resolution you can use for rendering resoltuion and that the game can definitely run by 800*600, any ideas ?

I think the game doesn't like a display resolution of 800x600... or something like that
try looking in here:

Check to see if you have a folder in your DATA directory called movWW. If you do, that needs to be renamed; I changed mine to movie.
he says the game doesn't crash without dsfix so it's not the movies, otherwise the game would crash regardless

Thank you very much that was indeed the problem and this guide made me understand more what the resolutions actually do and knowing that I can lower the render resolution even further is really nice, if only this option was a standard graphical option in most games nowadays potato gaming would be way easier.
Now my problem is that apparently Dark Souls crashes as soon as I try to unlock FPS, any idea about that ?

For the unlockFPS crash you might want to disable DEP for the game, just google it if you don't know how, it's easy to find detailed guides

Edit : nevermind still crashes the game, I'll look into disabling DEP completely

Looking into it disabling and enabling DEP and restarting the computer over and over again would be a pain, I added DarkSouls.exe to the list of exceptions but it still crashes, any other ideas ?

honestly no idea, disabling DEP works in 99% of cases... what version of windows are you using? And are you running any other software that might mess with the game in the background?

I'm using windows 8.1 and no, no softwares running in the background that could mess with the game.

Okay so by just running Steam as an administrator even with DEP enabled I'm finally able to run the game with unlockFPS set to 1. Now my problem is as soon as I quit the game it sets me to a different resolution to the one I'm using, it puts me at 1024*768 when I'm using 800*600 and running the game at that same resolution. The further I get the more problems I run into.

So if anyone runs into the same problem and finds this thread here are my current settings that seem to make things work :
Steam ran as administrator
- Dark Souls ran as a administrator
- Read Hoqjed's low resolution Dark Souls guide stated above for working render resolutions
- Beta version or normal version doesn't seem to matter
- DEP on or off in my experience doesn't seem to matter anymore
