Started as theif no master key

Started out with theif class and I flat out do not have the master key. I keep looking around forums for some answers but there seem to be none. there is no master key in my inventory and I even tested it out at the vally of the drakes gate and it did not open. What's the deal?

Master Key is an item you select during character creation.

On topic, I never started as a Thief and I'm just very curious whether you start with it in the inventory or whether you have to pick it up as secondary shiny before you plunge the butt-demon.
