DARK SOULS™: Prepare To Die Edition

DARK SOULS™: Prepare To Die Edition

Confused about lore?
What aspects of Lordran/Dark Souls confuse you the most?

To be more specific, have you ever wondered why, for example, there are blue golems in Darkroot Basin? Well, I wanna know what things still confuse you, or were the most confusing to you about the lore or enemy placement.

Ornstein and Smough were real. They were restored when the Flame was linked. However, Ornstein wasn't about to stick around. Remember that DS3 is the amalgamation of every Chosen undead that went through DS1. The existence of demons was prolonged by those of the Daughters of Chaos, and the Cathedral maintains in existence because of those in the Princess' Guard or whatever. Just like how the Sunlight covenant has always been around in some point.
Soooo are the bats real or not? Why do those two help you?

Why do Gwyn and the black knights attack on sight?
The Batwing Demons bring you to AL since they are servants of the gods and you have proven youself by beating Sens'.

Gwyn and the Black Knigghts are pretty much hollow (not the same hollow as undead, though).

Bats are real and those two are simply doing their jobs.
Gwyn went mad after 1000 years of burning alive and Black Knights are empty shells which bodies are burnt away by the renewed First Flame.
Are there three types of demons in DS series (DeS is not counted, the concept of demons there is different) as I understand it?
1. Kayoss Demons, which we all know and love. Living creatures disfigured by the Chaos Flame which are big, fierce, brutal and use fire and chaos elements, sometimes also spewing poisonus and acidic substances.
2. Demons what were transformed by their own uncontrollable desires. Crow demons were Velka's worshipers who wanted to fly so badly. Mimics are implied to be this. Gaping Dragon could be transforming into that type of demon too. DS II gives us The Covetous Demon changed by own gluttony and Demon of Song- the face of a man who couldn't control his lust. Usually not associated with any elements.
3. Artifical demons made from living creatures or living statues. Their difference from other artifical creatures are animalistic motives (Chimeric Sanctuary Guardian, Gargoyles which have bat wings and reptile tails, minotauric Smelters). So Stone Guardians and Iron Golems are not demons but Smelter Demons are. Demonic Foliages and gardeners of Oolacile are exceptions to this rule due to being made of plants. Can be imbued with various elements such as magic (Blue Smelter), fire (Belfry Gargoyles) and lightning (SGs and Anor Londo Gargoyles).
Not sure if Batwing Demons and Prowling Demons fill in any of those categories- former have no known origin and Prowling Demons simply popped from titanite slabs after blacksmith deity had gone.

He followed the Nameless KIng, according to DS3.

I haven't played DS 3 yet. >.<

When you read Smough's Hammer descrption it clearly says that Smough was the last knight guarding Anor Londo. Maybe that's the reason for when you kill Ornstein first, Smough crashes his body, it was not real after all.

Batwing Demons are Chaos Demons. It's stated in their weapon's item description.

Yeah... no... I figured something is fishy, since O&S drops only 1 humanity instead of 2. I'll be 100% honest, I never read Smough's armour description - and maybe if I did, I forgot it.

So I already knew Ornstein's presence is some-sort of trick, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions because of the ring drop if you kill him last.

Well, either DS1 Ornstein is an illusion, or both O&S's souls got resurrected before 3 happens.
I don't want to go to class, I wanna stay home and frink coffee and smoke :(

Dark Souls' 1 Ornstein's is not real, read the Smough Hammer Description of Dark Souls III:

O&S get resurrected or something -> Ornstein leaves for NK -> Smough's the last one to guard the cathedral when Adrich arrives
Nobody gets resurrected anywhere in these series, why would you think that?

It clearly states that he was defending the Cathedral in Dark Souls 1, of course

The 4 great souls? But they are not resurrected, they have been there since the start.

I don't really think that 4 great souls were resurrected, but they remained intact in Lordvessel, which lays broken at the Majula mansion. Somehow they were obtained by Pharros, O.I.K., Freja and whoever that Sinner was. This also explains they weren't reincarnated again DS3, because the Bearer of the Curse used them.

Oh, missed that one. That's weird, because their spears shoot lightnings, element associated with the Soul of Light, not the Soul of Life. Probably those spears are enchanted by Giant Blacksmith to deal lightning damage. It reminds me of an old thought, if Taurus, Capra and Asylum Duo were actually hired by Anor Londo to patrol parts of Lordran which are overrun by Undead.
