And I'll say it again, I beat him with soul arrows.
You basically complained about his lock ons / hitbox and mobility through obstacles, but I was able to use obstacles (despite his lock ons / hitbox) to beat him.
But I don't think he's a horrid boss like you described.
You probably chose one of the more difficult way of beating him, and you're complaining that he was badly designed because it wasn't easy to beat him that way.
I played a gish (aka dex sorcery) build, which worked out pretty fine. Well, mostly dex, but enough sorcery for basic spells. Also, I carried a shield.
Different enemies demand different tactics, imho. I parried knights, I rolled Capra Demon (and slashed him with a sword), I blocked skeleton wheels, I two handed against Artorias trying to power up... and I soul arrowed skeleton dog, etc etc.
You can plow through using the same method for all enemies, and I suppose that's fun, too... if that's your thing.
But that's getting off the subject.
I'm not saying you're a bad player (although you do have temper). I said your judgment on the final boss being a bad design because he was difficult to beat (due to you purposely choosing one of the more difficult way of beating him) was wrong.
is he really easy that way?
yeah.
is he a bad boss though?
nah.
♥♥♥♥ like Sanctuary Guardian and BoC are way more annoying to deal with.
Also when you're a heavy tank type you shouldn't have THAT much trouble.
However, take away the parry and certain aspects of his bossfight are incredibly punishing (and unfair when he hits you through an obstacle but come on, it's Dark Souls, a perfectly designed game, it's not a bug it's a feature).
There is a reason why Gwyn was designed in that way. Of course, as a final boss, you expected to find an all powerful monarch of ancient times, with some epic music background, and incredible power. You expected the biggest challenge of all the game. But when you entered the fog gate and the piano starts, what you found was the husk of Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight, emaciated and insane. A mere hollow.
You survived the Bell Gargoyles, the Capra Demon, Ornstein & Smough, the 04 Kings, the Bed of Chaos, etc. And your final challenge after all this hell is a madman with a sword that can be parried and riposted. What a plot twist.
If we compare Gwyn in terms of "how a final boss has to be", yes, Gwyn is a crappy final boss. But this is Dark Souls, is a game one of a kind. And Gwyn fits perfectly to show us the tragedy of the history.
Beautifully written!
