Soft or Liquid? If you just want to up your counter, there are three things you can do, depending on your ideal of play.

1: Duping. Parry, activate a confirmation item ("Use X?" i.e. Firekeeper Soul), hit start -> item -> use estus through item screen. Hit Yes on the item, gain humanity and not lose the item. (I reccomend looking up a video tutorial before attempting)

2: Duke's Archives: Teleport to the bonfire after the prison bonfire in the duke's archives. Kill a crystal warrior. Gain 1 liquid humanity. Teleport to Undead Parish. Repeat. Easy farm.

3: If you don't like glitching the game, you can just rest at a bonfire and slay humanity phantoms (The Abyss in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC) or slay rats (The Depths, under the hellkite dragon bridge) (This is soft humanity {i.e. you have to use it to gain the humanity, which also restores all health.)

Other than that, you can gain liquid humanity by killing invaders or killing a certain amount of enemies before slaying the boss of an area.

I think he means the Humanityghosts or however they are called in the DLC Area, rather lategame. Rats is your best bet if its early to mid game, the sewers before Blighttown have a fair bunch and rats got a good chance to drop them.

Aight... tyvm, I'm not very far into the game and I'm kinda dreading farming freakin rats haha. I dont even know what that dude was talking about above you, something about a duke archive? Wot

How early is 'not very far into the game'?

Rat farming isn't anywhere near as bad as you think it is in the Depths if you can also place your sign to get summoned or put on the Cat Covenant Ring to invade people in the Darkroot Garden.

I'm sittin in the forest right now with my sign at the bottom of the staircase by the duides that give you 2k souls. Does this give me liquid humanity?

It does if someone summons you and you two manage to kill the boss, but only then.

The area you are in is a place for the covenant called Forest Hunters. The benefits of being part of them are :
- Extra weapon salesman in mid-early game.
- Easy method of invasion in the forest area as long as you wear a ring (you can swap once in the opponent's world) and are in an area that easily connects to the forest (which includes the Depths where most people farm humanity).
- Early and easy access to Ring of Fog.
- The NPCs you mentioned that give a couple thousand souls no longer attack you (mixed blessing if you're actually grinding for souls for some reason).

The rats tend to go fairly quickly, especially if you have some humanity to spare to boost your drop rates. Plus you may be able to get summoned in for the gaping dragon fight which is fairly easy

Oh sorry, the Duke's Archives are late game. Like the last hour or two of gameplay (If you don't die ever).
