Why do people love grass crest shield
It takes chip damage from normal attacks it's awful and there is a ring that gives the same buff.

you dont waste a ring slot and you dont need to worry about chip damage if you roll or just go 2 handed with havels like the 4 kings fight

The thing is, the buffs stack and a good player doesn't really need to block, so it's probably the best shield in the game

People don't use it to block anyways, for 2h builds it's simply the best shield because of the buff, plus, some build with high poise can't afford to use a ring slot for cloranthy (such as the famous FaP and havel's)

People like Grass Crest Shield because most of multiplayer dueling sans turtling is done two handed, anyway, and a lot of players prefer two handed movesets on big weapons in the first place. Grass Crest Shield provides the stamina regeneration bonus even when just placed on your back (similar to Blood Shield, which I personally prefer, enhancing your resistances even then).
I would rather ask why having a shield on your back doesn't give you the protection from backstabs?

That's one thing Lords of the Fallen did right, with a shield on your back attacks from behind get blocked... projectiles at least, not sure about melee

Well, it should be difficult IRL to put katana through somepne's spine if he has a decent shield on the back. Not sure about the GCS, but Havel's shield should protect it for sure.

The hidden power in Mask of the Mother is that it allows one to backstab you no matter how much protection you have.

It also makes your character the target for certain jokes.
Your HavelMom is so fat when Pathces tried to kick her in the pit he broke his leg.

grass crest buff cann stack and when combined with the mask of the child, it's pretty insane, but I like the silver knight shield a little better only because it doesn't take chip and it takes less stamina than the grass crest shield to block physical attacks

grass crest is pretty cool though
