You can get out of the depths and buy purging stones to remove curse, they're somewhat expensive but that's better than having only a fraction of your max hp.

Go to the area where the Big Rat was, and slide down the waterfall thing hugging the left wall the whole descent. Then go immediately right into a corridor, up some stairs, and open the door at the top. You can skip the Basillisks completely.
