and i believe romancing multiple people can be hard (to see all the cutscenes on one file) because there is a sort of jealousy system in place, i think if you gift loved items to other people on front of other datable people it lowers the other peoples hearts a little.
AND in cutscenes there are dialogue options. there are right and wrong options that will raise or lower the characters love for you or others as well.
maxing all romance options on year 1 isnt neccesary though and its really easy to focus on one person in a year. I had matthew maxed out summer 1.
