between the pronoun options, having character customization being completely separated, and the open orientation of the marriage candidates, it makes choosing my character really open ended and freeing.
I no longer have to consider the end game before I even start.
I am nonbinary and I use they/them pronouns, and in older games I would choose my character based on what I wanted from the game. I would have to decide, how do i want people to talk about me? Do I wanna be Mom or Dad? Wife or Husband? Which marriage candidate do i want to marry? What aesthetic do I want to wear?
and feeling the need to start over if I change my mind part of the way through the game.
I would often have to compromise for a character that wasn't "me" so that I could have the family or aesthetic that I wanted.
But now, I can have all of it.
And... I might have cried just a little when I realized that, staring at the pronouns that actually included me for once. And it sends little zips of happiness through me every time someone in the game talks about me.
Because so many people in my real life "just don't get it" and I'm tired of fighting with them about it.
But here, in Forgotten Valley, people just accept it.
So thank you again.
I feel seen. I feel heard. I feel respected.
Thank you.
EVERY thread so far that has been denouncing this crap, has been closed, I expect to see the same thing with the reverse.
My post too, for that matter.
It's really cool that they added this! I'm glad they're trying to make everybody feel included. I'm also very happy that i can now play a feminine character and marry my childhood crushes (Nami & Muffy) as a girl :D
Unfortunately, the more "inclusive" we try to be, the more generic everything is going to get, which really only appeals to one very specific minority. We're going to end up with this sort of thing becoming standard, which excludes the vast majority of people in order to make this tiny minority happy.
Though, I do miss him looking like a Hokuto No Ken badguy.
Its just so silly. They won't play a game because of one little menu option at the beginning of the game which then has really no more impact to the game at all.
Personally, i find the pronoun thing just kinda dumb but if thats what people want to do, then I don't care, go for it.
No one cares if a D&D game comes out that lets you create an elf character, because it's a fantasy and we know it's not real. If there was a vocal minority of people in real life who said they actually identify as elves in the real world, and started demanding that everyone refer to them as elves in daily life, it would be a different story. We would think it was ridiculous.
Except suddenly, every piece of media is starting to have elves in them, even in non-fiction stories. Every game that lets you create your character can't have just a human option anymore, it has to include elves for the people who identify as one. If you try to point out that this is kind of silly, you get called a bigot who obviously just hates other races. If you try to say that this is a bit of a slippery slope that will lead to everyone making up and identifying as whatever they want, you get told you're actually a right-wing anti-vaxxer who hates women and gay people.
We don't really care if someone makes their character an elf, or even if they think it would be cool to be one. We care that we're told we have to accept that some people really are elves in real life, and that we have to treat them differently. We care that society seems to be saying that you can just make up anything you want and force the rest of the world to go along with it. We don't want that to be normalized.
I'm sure this post will be removed soon, as any negative opinions on this subject seem to be banned here, but hopefully a few people will read it first.
There is 0 reason to not accommodate something like this in 2023.
Easy solution to this. Dont acknowledge them. Its that simple. The minute someone brings up some garbage about what you should refer to them as, simply walk away, I promise you, they will get enraged, and you just keep walking.
Thats the funny part, their crying only works as long as you give them an ear. Take that away, and they simply scream into a void of nothing.
Just to be clear, this is what I do. I refuse to have any sort of conversation with anyone I dont know about gender. I dont care how big of a jerk that makes me seem either, I simply dont entertain that nonsense in the real world.
