Celia into Cecilia
Muffy into Molly
Cody into Gordy
Marlin into Matthew
etc
Which, at that, is just minor changes.
Cecilia's name just has an extra syllable added. (In Japan, her name is more like Sepiria)
Muffy is shortened form of Muffin, a nickname for the name Mary.
Molly is a pet form of the name Mary.
So her name either way roughly means the same thing: Mary or Maria.
(Unlike Japan, where her name is Mumu)
Marlin... okay, yeah, I have no idea where Natsume got that fishy name from in the original.
In Japan, his name is Masshu (or Mash).
Of which Matthew is remarkably close to that pronunciation.
A lot of NPCs names weren't even close to their Japanese ones, like Dr. Hardy instead of Dr. Baddoch.
Gary (formerly Galen) is known in Japan as Gari.
Lou... well, we knew her name had changed, because it had in Friends of Mineral Town.
(Which, fun fact: She was called Lou even in the original FoMT (GBA). Natsume forgot to change her name)
But overall, a lot of the old name were made up by the old publisher, and they needed to change them to be closer to the Japanese names, both because Marvelous wanted to, and also possibly for legal reasons.
Its same like Ran name in SoS FoMT, people keep calling it different than the original and the people would defended it would claimed its the "JP original", not just a plain "original".
