Over the last couple of years I've made regular attempts to get Fear 3 working with my Windows 10 Pro PC, I've deleted the install and downloaded it to a different hard drive several times. I've also built a new PC in that time period which required a clean Operating System and Steam install but still I couldn't get the game to work.
Today I thought I'd try telling Steam to move it to a different drive rather than manually deleting and then re-installing it.
Once it had finished moving the install I tried starting the game and it worked.
The games finally working.
If like me you've been unable to get the game to run and have tried all the suggestions in this thread with no luck try telling Steam to move it to either a separate drive/partition or a different folder. Not delete it just move it.
I hope this helps some of you.
"Press the Windows key on the keyboard (which displays the Microsoft logo), and simultaneously press the 'R'.
An execution window (command prompt) will appear.
Type msconfig in the Open field and click OK. The System Configuration Utility opens.
Click the General tab.
Select the "Selective startup" option.
Uncheck the "Load startup items" check box.
Click the Services tab.
Make sure that the "Hide All Microsoft Services" option is selected.
Click Disable All.
Click OK.
Click Restart.
After rebooting (and logging in to Windows), a window will appear to confirm that "You used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way Windows is started." Click OK. The System Setup Utility appears. Do not click OK yet as this will prompt you to restart again. First take a test to see if the problem persists.
If performing these steps resolves the problem, you can use the System Configuration Utility to enable system services and third-party startup items one or more at a time (restarting the computer after activating items) to identify which system service or boot item is causing the conflict.
To reactivate all of them at once, simply select the Normal startup option on the General tab of the System Configuration Utility window, but this may cause the problem to recur."
I hope this will help, it is to me, the game's now running perfectly!!
Thanks for posting this, I eventually got mine working but I'll copy paste this into my odds n' sods file so it's there if I ever need it in the future, Cheers.
Having to do this every time I want to play Fear 3 is not an option. All of this just for one game isn't worth it.
Try what worked for me, Go into the Games properties via Steam and tell it to move the install folder, for me a reinstall and a file integrity check didn't work but moving the games folder via Steam commands did which was very weird but hey it worked & it doesn't take long to try.
