Which game are you mapping for?

I had a similar issue with Portal 2s Hammer - here's how I fixed it x)
>>>Hammer crashes abnormally often

Well, deinstall visual stuido if you have it, check if you modified windows or hammer, deinstall / vertify game cache of TF2 and its tools- if it still doesn't work I'd either "deal with it" or reinstall windows...

The access violation is probably hammer attempting to access an area of memory that is either in-use or protected.

Raybes solution of removing and reinstalling probably eliminated a few items that were in memory and/or not accurately reporting what areas of memory they were using to the OS.
The OS knows/thinks it's 'in-use' and tells Hammer it's not allowed to use it causing the error.

So, if you don't want to go through what Raybe did I would start by looking over processes that are running on yoru system using the task manager and ending the tasks that are not needed and retry Hammer. Removing these items from the startup altogether and rebooting would be best. Every pc ends up with tons of stuff that is loaded in memory on startup that doesn't need to be there and it uses up system resources. Best to scan for/remove unnecessary startup items.
