Erio's Choice Puzzle Spoilers
how the FLIP was I supposed to solve this puzzle? I looked up the solution after the game stopped giving me hints, most of which were useless.
I get that the five items are tied to curses - that is obvious - but where does this order come from? Mio says "try the order in which they died" but none of the item descriptions have dates in them.

I got the answer after piecing together from what's written in the resentful memories portion in the cursed items.

Canal: "Spirit name Toki, her father Jinkichi disappeared first followed by her mother Koma"
Reed: "Spirit name Okoma who died after trying to clear her husbands name"
Beech: "Spirit name Jinkichi"
Taiko: No information, his resentful memory has no correlation to the rest, with it only really saying that he had a granddaughter, which you find out later was the Canal spirit.
Light: Regrets the death of the young couple and their daughter. Implication of the family being the Beech(father), Reed(mother) and Canal(daughter).

from this information you can figure out that
Canal died after her father(Beech) and mother(Reed) went missing.
Reed died after her husband(Beech) trying to clear his name.
Beech died first of the family can be inferred from Canal's and Reed's stories.
Light died last because he felt regrets over the others deaths.
Taiko I don't know for this one

Gives you something like Taiko > Beech > Reed > Canal > Light in order of deaths and I just guessed that Taiko was first.

Additionally there's another file named The Honjo Incident which depicts the chronological order that all the cursed spirits died in but I forgot when that unlocks because I read it after completing the game.

wow, that went past me. I'm pretty sure the single file outlining the entire tale only unlocks after you complete the puzzle.

You get it confirmed later, but it's order of deaths. Taiko died first, as the drums had been going on before the Beech died. Beech second, Reed third, Canal fourth and then, finally, the Light.

For Taiko specifically, I also guessed that Taiko was first, but my reasoning was that something triggered Beech to be blamed for the false Rite. The only one that made sense was Taiko so my theory was that Taiko's death was related to a failed rite, which then cause Beech to be blamed.

Turns out it wasn't true, but the order was still right anyway.

Beech > Reed > Canal > Light all have specific references to each other so the order could be deduced pretty easily. It was just Taiko that didn't quite make sense

I really hated that part of the game. Until then the game was SO easy and suddenly the difficulty jumped high. I thought the answer has to be something really simple and obvious because every other puzzle was also easy. Time passed and I ended up looking here. I don't understand why they have to do it so hard and Mio didn't help at all. It felt like she knew the correct answer but didn't want to help on purpose, lol. And after the conclusion there was no help to find the correct chapter to continue the story. I thought I have to free Mayu to get The Beckoning Light, but no, it appeared at the park all of a sudden. This doesn't make any sense. Oh I loved the beginning of the game so much, it was amazing, but the ending was just terrible.

An Ukiyo-e painter is referenced in Beech, that's the hint that tells you their order.

It's worth noting that the Beckoning Light's will-o-wisp was in the park during your first playthrough of that section. Shogo can't interact with it at that time, but he will comment on it if you examine it.

Bro I just looked at the curses images in the files and you can see a little ball in the rope of each curse stone, taiko was the one with the shortest distance and beckoning light was the longest, thats all, thats how I got it.
It can be solved by following the events of what happened in order

We know that whispering canal (carp) must be close to the last because it relates to the missing father and mother

Beech leaf is about the father dying for apparently deceiving people

Reed is about the mother dying believing the father was deceived

Taiko is a story about the rite of resurrection

Light is the regret about the events that transpired

Therefore at the very least we know beech leaf > Reed > Carp. Since the father has to die for the mother to find who deceived him, and then the daughter has to die afterwards because her father and mother left her.

Given that light is about regret of the events, we can assume that's last. Also Taiko seems to be what kinda "triggers" the events in a sense because its kinda evident the father is alive during this time.

So it has to be Taiko > Beech leaf > Reed > Carp > Light
