Crashing on new game start up

I bought this game a while back and I have been trying to find a way to get it to work as every time I press ''New Game'' it crashed immediately after hitting Ok. I tried verifying my cache and deleting local files to fix this but I keep getting ''1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired'' every time I try verifying.

Is there any fix to this or will I have to refund this game?

try compatibility mode with win xp or running it as administrator to see if it helps

I went into my local files and it only really shows the application MM.exe. tried both of those with that and neither seem to fix it, only going to white screen and going into the intro then saying ''Can't find background image 'materials/console/background01_widescreen.vtf'. tried reinstalling 3 times already and that hasn't helped either.

Also on windows 8.1 if that helps.

try disabling antiviruses if you have any before you open the game just in case
also maybe try playing with the video settings a bit to see if it keeps crashing (like lower resolution and stuff)

Find a file called "background01.vtf" in your game folder, make a copy of it and rename it as "background01_widescreen.vtf". That should get you past the error.

Can't seem to find that file at all inside the Dark messiah file directory, perhaps that may be the problem?

Also I have turned down graphics to low, turned off all anti-virus and have tried starting it up in aspect 4:3 in order to see if the problem was that I couldn't play on 16:9. still nothing.

It has to be there. Tried looking in the "materials/console/" directory?

I open up Materials and there's only material/models/104_cllbts then a text doc named ''l7_woodbeam08_v_uses_l07_wood_a_vtfs'' inside 104_cllbts.

yea i have it just like that as well so dont think thats it
did you try downloading a save game and then load it? (that way you dont have to start a new game and maybe you can avoid the crash. unlikely but stil..)

"background01.vtf" is stored in the vpk files in vpk folder.
Unpacking the vpk's and having the file visible in the materials\console\ folder doesn't seem to help.
It stops the file missing error but white screen and crash is the same.

Probably securom error ,checked the exe with Dependencies program
and looks like there's a few issues in syswow64 sections but i don't fully understand how to interpret the results.
