Issue with Steam Deck keybinds (Move forward defaults to Z!)

I recently purchased DMoMaM and the in game keybinds are all messed up. The biggest and most notable is Z being bound to move forward instead of W. The default keybinds for the steam deck has W for move forward, as well as all of the highly upvoted community layouts, so something is definitely going wrong. Switching Z out for W is easy enough, but all the other bindings are wrong too and this game has a lot of controls.

The mystery of why this is happening is also bothering me. Ive of course tried resetting the controls to default but it sets walk forward right back to Z. I've done some googling and it might be defaulting to the keybinds for an AZERTY keyboard but I have no idea why this would be happening or how to change it. My virtual keyboard is the standard QWERTY layout.

If anyone has any ideas for things I could try please let me know!

Also if anyone could share a list of their in game default controls it would help a lot! At least then I could change it to "default" manually and then use a community layout.

"Good news is you're not alone, looks like the default controls are messed up for everyone. The ProtonDB listing (https://www.protondb.com/app/2100) for the game only has 5 reports, but 3 of them mention the default keybindings being messed up.

The PC gaming wiki has instructions for fixing this problem on windows (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Dark_Messiah_of_Might_and_Magic#Game_installs_AZERTY_.28French.29_keyboard_layout). The issue is that the steam and retail versions of the game install a french keyboard layout for AZERTY. I'm not exactly sure how to fix it on linux though, you could possibly use protontricks (installable from the discover store), select the game prefix for DMoMaM, run regedit to edit the registry, and then delete the layout from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Keyboard Layouts. Otherwise, your best bet is probably just to manually change the keybinds back.
