How is steam allowing this is beyond me.
Yeah no way I'm removing all of steam and game library from my PC. I'd rather the devs just
fix the game and get it up to date with the technology since it's still pulling money for them.
I'll give it a few more days and will contact steam asking for a solution. I don't want a refund and don't think I can get it either considering I bought it back in 2015.
This isn't the only game in my library that was abandoned by devs and now it won't start. At least take it off steam, bundle it with the source code or provide a DRM free executable...
Got a different version of the game that's not from steam and used the patch. no changes... tried a few compatibility settings, no change. Going to just get a refund i guess.
I'm sorry to hear some of you can't launch the game. It may be that you need to try running the game in compatibility modes for other windows versions to get the game to run on Windows 10.
If you are unsure how to use this, some guidance on how to do this can be found on the Microsoft site {LINK REMOVED}here

As mentioned above compatibility mode does not help. It remains stuck in running under steam but it never actually launches. The game most likely needs updating to more modern tech, much like valve did with the rest of the products running the source engine.
ok
Unfortunately not all developers give the same treatment since it costs money to pay a developer for the time spent. This should not be a problem if they are still making profit off sales though.
What I find unacceptable is steam is allowing to sell essentially abandon-ware without any consequences. They should at least remove the product from sales if not force the developer to ship source code, modding tools or a DRM free version so that modders can at least attempt to fix the game they purchased.
Right now the only way to get anything back is if you're lucky to have bought it recently and can request a refund but if you bought it some time ago tough luck! It's basically a broken game in your library. What pisses me off is that this isn't the only game in my library with this issue.
Leaving these current developers aside this is a faliure of steam for not having the tools to deal with abandoned entries...
There is a thread just near this one too with some suggestions too:

I can play Dark Messiah under Win 10 with this option.
Hey there.
Thanks for sharing what helped you to resolve this. Hopefully this will assist others experiencing similar issues in future.
Thanks!

I was able to launch it with this... It's most likely is a temporary solution but today it fixed my issue. Thanks.
