Manual: How to Run Dark Messiah of Might & Magic on Windows 10
You don't have to thank me, you better thank Google Translate
Hello everyone. In a purely random way, I somehow thought of it, and after many failures, but with a great desire, I managed to launch and play Dark Messiah on my Windows 10.
Below on the points you must do everything the same way !!! All actions are required !!!

1) Install the game in Steam

2) Next, after installation, you must go to the bin folder and from there copy the binkw32.dll file to the root folder of the game, that is, to the main Dark Messiah folder

3) After that click on the shortcut of the game and select "properties". In them we select the item "Compatibility" and you should have "Compatibility with Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

4) And at the very end, click on the game in Steam with the right mouse button, select "Set launch parameters", in the Launch parameters we enter this -dxlevel 81

After that, the game should work.

If anything, write here!

I hope I helped you!

P.S A couple more ways to solve startup problems

1) If you get the following error:
Procedure entry point _BinkShouldSkip @ 4 was not found in DLL binkw32.dll.
There is a Bin folder in the game folder, from it copy binkw32.dll to the root folder (where the mm shortcut is).
It helped me with windows 7 64bit
2) I suppose all computers have at least dual-core when, after starting the game, call the "task manager" (ctrl + alt + del), then find the processes "mm.exe" in the tab (in short, the process that is responsible for the game) click on it with the right click on the mouse and select "set correspondence", then uncheck all processors (CPUs) except one, thereby you will make the game think that having lost one core). If it does not help, then try to find the process "steam.exe" and do the same, and then restart the game.

3) In addition to this, in the folder with the game (where the steam installed it, usually this is the steam folder - x: \ Steam \ SteamApps \ common), set the compatibility in the shortcut to either Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Next, run this shortcut as administrator.

4) You can also right-click on the game in the library in the incentive and select "properties -> local files -> check the integrity of the cache", this will enable the check for buggy files and replace them by re-downloading the damaged ones. At this moment, you need the included Internet.

5) Just reinstalling the game Over9000 times, it really helps some.

P.S.S. Write about which of the ways helped you.

Don`t mention it, these are just words of courtesy or this guide really helped you and you are planning to do something to fix the problem with starting this game?

This guide is helpful yes, I will pass the feedback on to the game team. I am unable to say if any changes will be made because of this though.

Thank you.

Sad, it´s not working in Windows 10 21H1.
But i have no problems to play the game under Windows 7 which i have still installed for older games and privacy acting.

Hey! Glad to hear that you managed to find a way to get this to work on Windows 7. What happens when you try to play it on Windows 10?

Game will start, desktop-resolution is changing, all tasks go to the background, means i can´t click by mouse any other tasks. I can see my desktop-wallpaper and in the left corner above a little white square is shown.
Not more happens and i have to kill "mm.exe" by the taskmanager.
Then the resolution goes back to normal view.

I've tried the above. It takes forever to start up and when it does it's starting slowly.

It was booting up fine yesterday before I made the changes. It seemed just to crash a lot and I wanted to make it more stable. I would presume something that (I think) uses the Source Engine would be able to be optimized for more modern systems, if anyone had the desire to.

Thanks for the post, sadly I tried it all... Nothing worked.
If any one gets a fix please post it!

I did not need the last step, the launch parameters DX81. That actually made the game not work. Once I removed that it works perfect, currently in chapter 4 after a new start, only one crash to desktop so far. Fully updated Windows 10.

Thank you, to be honest, I recommend that you take old games from specialized services, where they are prepared for modern operating systems. If Steam cannot solve this, then it does not deserve an extra dollar! How much money I gave them for old games, the same headache and hemorrhoids I got squared !!!
As long as you buy old games as they are, nothing will change

Try this in the Startoptions under steam:

-applaunch 2100 -dxlevel 90
