If i don't want to spend time searching for a better solution for your specific PC configuration i can suggest these.
Set all the graphics options on low, you can set them back to high when the chapter is loaded.
You can try to download a tool to fix crashes on modern systems. Large Address aware.
Put that into the search bar here on the left ------------------------------------>>>>
There is a already a discussion about it
This game is old and seems to have a compatibility problem with the memory in modern systems, most likely the much higher capacity of new ram sticks.
This reddit post solved the issue for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/darkmessiah/comments/jqixcy/fixing_crashes_for_dark_messiah/
The fix involves replacing the default game executable with a modified one made by some random internet person, which is a bit sketchy but I tested the modified file with VirusTotal and as far as I can tell, it's completely safe to use.
1. I ran the game with all sound on 0
2. I saved in the middle of the cutscene just in case.
I have no idea if this can be replicated.
My girlfriend is playing this on her steamdeck and is experiencing considerably less bugs. Something to consider.
