You select (by validating your acquired skill points) between different paths to reach your goals, for instance a Warrior style or a Magic spell style, and whether you stay friend or become foe with certain characters that you meet or that accompany you. So you're playing with RPG elements in a rather simple form, but not going deep enough to really consider this an RPG.
Might & Magic series is a RPG. Except this only one: Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.
This game is an Action Adventure game, where in its main gameplay is combat, puzzle solving and platforming with full action gameplay. This game is actually closer to tomb raider than doom ( an actual FPS ) or Elder Scrolls ( RPG ). The games tags that are given to it from the store page are: RPG, Action, First Person, Fantasy, and Adventure ( in that order ) with the latter 4 tags being the true descriptors.
The reasons this game is called an RPG are understandable, but wrong imo. 1. It is set in a swords and sorcery fantansy setting. Even if a game is a point and click Myst clone, if it is set in a medevil setting with magic it will be called by many an RPG. 2. This game is a part of the Might and Magic series which is known for it original first person world exploring/dungeon crawling RPG games and its popular spin off strategy RPG games ( Heros of Might and Magic ). 3. It has a true RPG feature to it, which is stat allocation. You can use skill points to choose charater abilities and stats. This actually has a big impact in play style. But I would say that its so under developed that even the console version of the game took out stat allocation and just let you choose play styles at the start of the game. Something you couldnt do if stat allocation was actually a crucial and important part of the game.
NO!!! This game is not a FPS/RPG. If you are looking for that kind of game than check out the Borderlands series.
