Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Single Player

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Single Player

Why is this game considered an RPG?
I feel this game should not being considered an RPG. It's a very linear game, you don't get experience points for killing enemy, you only get skill points by progressing in the story, and you only have 2 choices that inpact the end of the game, and 2 endings. Shouldn't this game be just considered a first person action adventure?

Lots of games have the same elements and are not considered RPG.

This is a FPS (First Person Shooter), whatever some may say.

You select (by validating your acquired skill points) between different paths to reach your goals, for instance a Warrior style or a Magic spell style, and whether you stay friend or become foe with certain characters that you meet or that accompany you. So you're playing with RPG elements in a rather simple form, but not going deep enough to really consider this an RPG.

Might & Magic series is a RPG. Except this only one: Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.

Genres are imaginary.

It is officially classed as a first-person action video game. Which it is.

More of a FPS adventure game in my opinion but yeah, not an RPG or even an ARPG.

Anything with a skill tree gets slapped with the RPG label now a days. It's a bit silly.

Why does it matter?

FPS does not have to actually mean "shooting a gun". I consider this game FPS/RPG. The RPG is a few fold. First, you can choose being a magician as you progress, or a warrior, or a stealth thief...or a combo all of the above. You can choose during the game how the story will go, and there are a few different endings. So a light RPG. Same with Bioshock.

Actually "FPS" does mean a shooter ( that is what the "S" stands for, although you are right about the gun part but no one thought that any way ),where in its gameplay is primarily focused on shooting a projectile weapon from the first person perspective ( Why Bioshock is not a lite-rpg and definately an FPS ) . Thats why this game isnt an FPS and In fact just because you can shoot a weapon from a first person perspective doesnt make a game an FPS. Thief is not FPS, it's Stealth. Mirror's Edge is not FPS, it's platforming. Chivalry is an arena combat game and not FPS. Portal is a puzzle platform game and not FPS.
This game is an Action Adventure game, where in its main gameplay is combat, puzzle solving and platforming with full action gameplay. This game is actually closer to tomb raider than doom ( an actual FPS ) or Elder Scrolls ( RPG ). The games tags that are given to it from the store page are: RPG, Action, First Person, Fantasy, and Adventure ( in that order ) with the latter 4 tags being the true descriptors.
The reasons this game is called an RPG are understandable, but wrong imo. 1. It is set in a swords and sorcery fantansy setting. Even if a game is a point and click Myst clone, if it is set in a medevil setting with magic it will be called by many an RPG. 2. This game is a part of the Might and Magic series which is known for it original first person world exploring/dungeon crawling RPG games and its popular spin off strategy RPG games ( Heros of Might and Magic ). 3. It has a true RPG feature to it, which is stat allocation. You can use skill points to choose charater abilities and stats. This actually has a big impact in play style. But I would say that its so under developed that even the console version of the game took out stat allocation and just let you choose play styles at the start of the game. Something you couldnt do if stat allocation was actually a crucial and important part of the game.
NO!!! This game is not a FPS/RPG. If you are looking for that kind of game than check out the Borderlands series.
