They'd rather shut it down than do something nice for the people.

I also heard that they stopped responding to inquiries from people, but when someone on Reddit posted about how the game can be played offline after it shuts down its servers, his post was immediately taken down.

Just remember this when their next project comes out. It will be abandoned after they reck it too. Not so slim shady over there at HSL not caring bout us....:(

You could play with bots for hours after the server was shut down. Today however I get stuck in the "looking for server" bit it forces you to when you attempt to play.

I'm thinking if we could bypass that somehow, then you could get to the client side practice mode and play with bots ??

If you can modify the client to connect to localhost it will probably work.

I've found out that if you download the Blacklight Retribution Community Editor you can recreate some levels in it and play with bots. I've only messed around with it for about an hour, but it seems the way it works is:

Select a level, add sound, pathfinding, and game type. Open the level use the console command to spawn however many bots you want and play. You start with the default gear, but looks like that can be changed. The bot's weapon are custom and you can pick them up and use them. After the game you quit out and start all over.

If this sounds like something you'd like to try, this is how you DL the editor

1. Open Steam
2. Hover over the Library menu and select Tools
3. Find the Blacklight Community Editor in the resulting list
4. Right-click and Install game...
5. Animated gif for reference: https://i.imgur.com/1s9YRTk.gifv

Loading a Map
After the Editor has started, load one of the pre-installed maps; let's use the Competitive version of Heavy Metal (this was never released). We will also load the spawn points, AI pathing, and audio sub-levels. This is required if you wish to play against bots, and really, you out to do it anyway. Once you load the sub-levels, you can save the map and you will no longer need to do this step.

1. Go to File > Open...
2. Navigate to <Steam path>\steamapps\common\Blacklight Retribution Community Editor\FoxGame\Content\Maps\COMPETITIVE\HeavyMetal\
3. Select the map COMP_HeavyMetal.fmap and click OK
4. Open the Level browser: View > Browser Windows > Levels
5. Navigate to Level > Add existing level... and select the pathing sub-level. e.g., COMP_HeavyMetal_Pathing
6. Select the streaming method 'AlwaysLoaded' and click OK
7. Do the same thing for the Spawn sub-level. e.g., COMP_HeavyMetal_Spawns.fmap
8. Do the same thing for the Audio sub-level, e.g., COMP_HeavyMetal_Audio.fmap
9. Do the same thing for the Pathing sub-level, e.g., COMP_HeavyMetal_Pathing.fmap
10. Close the Levels browser window

Playing with Bots
After loading a map, and the corresponding sub-levels, you can play a practice match against as many bots as you like.

1. Click the green triangle Play button in the top-right of the Editor
2. When the game has loaded, press ~ to open the command console
3. Type SpawnBots 15 and hit enter to spawn 15 bots
4. Turn on god mode and infinite ammo to experience joy. Press ~ to open the command console and type God, hit enter, then do the same with InfiniteAmmo

Difference is Tango Down is Peer to peer and designed for it. BLR cannot function without the 3rd party assets and middle ware that is stored on the servers it used to use. Tango Down still connects to servers for matching making btw. They connect to Xbox servers I would guess due to GFWL. But that is the difference. When you play BlackOps it is technically online in that you are hosting a local PVE and people can join you.
We do still play Tango Down in out community so if you miss BLR join us for PVP multiplayer when we host our Events.
