That is to say, a lot of work on the part of those involved if this hasn't been in the works already.
Edit: Also a quick look at Ace of Spades leads me to believe they had a very easier time than anyone working on this ever would simply due to the fact that there are an absurd amount of low-polygon models available on various asset stores that match the style of the game, allowing for quite literally very little legal complications outside of direct references to the IP.
That isn't the case with the Blacklight: Retribution IP.
But of course some corners would need to be cut to get the project up and running in a reasonable time frame. It could be done in a much simpler artstyle, like this for example: https://syntystore.com/collections/frontpage/products/polygon-sci-fi-city while still retaining the aesthetic of BLR.
The question is, would the final result (BLR gameplay with simple graphics) be something the community would be interested in playing?
That said, things usually are never easy when actually doing it when it comes to this.
They're subreddit seems to be dead though, I guess that means there isn't much interest in something like that. Who knows, maybe it will be more popular once/if they get this thing off the ground.
i got zero graphical abilities but i can do the code if it becomes serious give me a poke and expect a discord setup for communication or something equally ^^
I'd hold off actually doing anything until we can figure out exactly what this project is supposed to be. Most of those kits are pretty high quality, and if we don't get a reliable artist to "fill in the gaps" that we can't find assets for then we're ♥♥♥♥♥♥. It might be better to go for a much simpler artstyle, but I don't know if such a downgrade would be acceptable to the potential playerbase.
While there was an attempt at making a "spiritual successor" (as named by the crew on the Halcyon project), they ran into quite a few issues in the last couple months, and they announced on their discord that because of various things, including real-life problems, they had to shut it down, and are no longer working on it.
