How to Solve the "Crash-to-Desktop" Bug
Look. I am not a tech guy, but there were some logical conclusions to draw when my Witcher 2 game would randomly crash to my desktop without warning, or when I tried to save/load. It worked fine in the past, so why not now?

If you were thinking it was a complicated issue, then think again. All you need to do is manage your saved games. I don't know why the game has this save game bug, but it crashes/ slows down the game. Simply delete all of your saved files up to the most recent save, and keep the total number no more than 6 or 7.

You will crash out of the game while trying to delete files, but notice how much faster the game reacts when you do get rid of the old saves.

Personally, I wish they would just release a patch to solve this problem, but for now, this is what has worked for me.

Maybe it has something to do with the computer's RAM? Idk. Figure it out devs.

Thanks

I agree, need fix crash like when delete savegame (and other crash when load or save) :
* if delete manually in remote-directory => steam back savegame
* then need delete in game => crash => sync steam-witcher2 take many time => delete savegame in game => crash .....

Keep Steam cloud disabled in properties AND ingame. Those savegames are 1/2 MB files you upload to Steam cloud with limited storage. It's like uploading 4/8 screenshots each time you press the save button. Store it locally and use an SSD to prevent savegame crashing. I have 252 savegames stored with a total size of 517 MB, and none of those are stored in cloud. All from mydocs\the witcher 2\ , read from a SSD.

If you don't own a SSD, stick to OP's advice.

Its caused by the witcher 2 filling up your steam cloud storage with saved games. Steam only lets you have 100mb for each game and the witcher 2 fills that up pretty quickly. The devs know all about it.

...I was about to load up- I was playing this game since release with no issues. Around -say, nearing the end of the Christmas sales a few months ago, that's when it started happening for me. I was over half way through the story and then whatever this bug is made it unplayable. Perhaps there was an update around that time that messed things up. I can tell you it's only the Steam copy of the game. I also own the disc version and loaded it up on my PC, starting from scratch 'ggrrr', and no problems at all. Go figure. **Does anyone know if this has been brought up to Steam or CDPR/their site?

It figures the first time I hit the guy with the ballista in the beginning on the first try, I was on disc copy, in other words, no achievement. Hide and watch, Steam version gets fixed and I'll never be able to do it again, or for some other painfully long amount of time! :) :diamonddust:

Disable cloud sync and read this http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2470784

I'm playing just fine with Steam/cloud all fully enabled. The one about deleting excess saves hit it on the head. When you do that, then start the game from whatever point, in the Steam window it will show how much space you have. Running fine. :diamonddust:

MIne crashed twice, but only when i went to my desktop while playing. Then i paused the game, or simple just entered my inventory, and it has not crashed since. My buddy had the same issue.

Strange, I'm in game now- hit shft/tab to check my Steam, that goes fine and if I hit the windows key to deal with desktop/other it's not an issue. Wonder what causes that.. at least you can play though, that's most important. Glad ppl have found answers- though varying, for the crash problem. This isn't the type of game you don't want to be able to play!

unfortunately, it doesn't worked to me.

Here we are a year later and no fix. Wished I'd have read this thread before buying this game.

Crash on loading save games
The game crash to desktop without any error messages.Reason for that is because you have too many saves , and the game struggles with this. You'll have to delete the old ones or at least backup them in another folder.Depending on whether the steam cloud is enabled or disabled in the game, save location will be the following:

With enabled cloud: /Steam/userdata/id/20920/remote .However, saves can be removed straight from the folder only if cloud saving is deactivated.
With disabled cloud: C:/User/My Documents/Witcher 2/gamesaves

Ya what I do is just delete all my save games before starting a new game right out of the folder and then when I start a new game the game runs nice and stable. :)

Is there an easy way to delete the previous saved games from cloud? Me being an idiot didn't disable saved cloud and now the bug is getting so bad it just keeps crashing. I have disable cloud but when I try and delete from the game it just crashes

  • Steam cloud disabled.
  • Shut down Steam completely. It must disappear from the task manager.
  • Use the Explorer to find your saves. Seek for *.sav
  • Copy your saves to another place (USB-stick etc.). Don't delete them - you never know. Only your actual saves should stay where they are. Delete now all saves you don't need.
  • Use the explorer to find witcher2. exe. Start the game using the .exe

Works? Then you can restart Steam if you want - after shutting down the game.
