The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Witcher Mac OSX will not launch
Hello

Just bought witcher 1 for mac osx

the game will not launch. after I click play in steam an icon bounces on the dock for a moment and then disappears. the game then says that it had to 'quit unexpectedly'. I tried verifying the cache of game files, and steam told me those files were just fine. What can I do now? My computer meets the requirements but just in case I've got a Nvidia 9400 256 card graphics card, 8 gb ram, 2.66 processor, running 10.8.2. Seems a few people have encountered crashes after a google search with no solution.

I followed those 16 steps and while now Witcher at least launches, which it didn't before, I have a very strange graphics glitch, with horizontal bars flickering through the image. What's especially strange is that if I hold alt+tab or press cmd+opt+esc, the graphics smooth out to a clear image. If I release alt+tab (while selecting Witcher to stay in the program) or close the force quit window, the graphics quickly get the horizontal bars flickering through them again. I suppose I could play the whole game with a force quit window hidden in the corner but that's pretty annoying. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
After I click "update wrapper", the app says "Wineskin is currently busy, please wait" and then a moment later closes. I noticed at the end of the instructions you say I should close wineskin, so is it supposed to stay open? Is the update not working properly?
Ok I have done the wrapper thang on my new mac book pro running mavricks and it would now play the game but would never keep a save. I had played the game before right when I downloaded it, but since it would not work. Once I did the wineskin thang, it worked (pushed play, screen went white, returned to steam then back to full screen and played.) but now with no save abialty not worth playing.

My biggiest issue is the "Help" from Steam. They said just to check the board, then go to Atari. Now I can't comment on Atari help as they have not responded to my three attemps. But Steam, was almsot usuless.

So to sum up; Steam help NG. Wineskin worked, execpt not save. If anyone comes up with a solution post!!!!!
FYI here is the post to use wineskin if you don't have it:

Alright, this is a pain in the ♥♥♥ but I got it to work. If you follow this guide below it should work for you, but you have to follow it EXACTLY, same wineskin engine and all.

**thanks to KOMOSH for posting this**

NOTE: Before you do these steps I recommend going into steam right-click the witcher and select "Properties" then goto "Local Files" tab and click "Verify Integrity Of Game Cache" and let it fix any missing/changed files it finds.

Now you can start. It is long list if steps but actually it is very very easy.

1- Goto http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php and download the latest Wineskin winery (as of now it should be v1.7) and install it on you mac.

2- Goto http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.7.4 download latest XQuartz and install it on your mac.

3- Run Wineskin winery and download the latest wine engine (for now it is WS9Wine1.5.13) you do this by clicking the "+" button and select the engine and then click "Download and Install".

4- Also on the same main screen for Wineskin Winery make sure it says the wrapper is Wineskin-2.5.8 (the latest as of now).

5- Now from the same main screen for Wineskin Winery select "Create New Black Wrapper".

6- When it asks about the wrapper name it does not matter what you call it just click ok to continue.

7- Wait for it to create the wrapper and click cancel for both Mono and Gecko when it asks you if you want to install them.

8- When it finishes creating the wrapper it will show a dialog saying "Wrapper creating finished" now click the "View wrapper in finder" button. This should open the finder and show you the wrapper app.

9- Right click the wrapper app and select "Show package contents". Now leave this finder window open as it is and open another window (press Cmd+N to open one quick).

10- In the new finder window press "Shift+Cmd+G" and paste this path "~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/the witcher enhanced edition" in the goto text box.

11- You should now be in the Witcher steam folder and will be able to see "The Witcher" app.

12- Right click the "The Witcher.app" and select "Show package contents".

13- Go back to your other Finder window (where you have the contents of the wrapper shown) and copy the "wineskin.app" file from there to the other finder window (the one with the contents of the witcher app).

14- Run the wineskin.app (the one that you just copied) from inside the Witcher.app. It should give you 4 buttons of options select "Advanced" then select the "Tools" tab and click "Change Engine used". Make sure "WS9Wine1.5.13" engine is select if not select it from the drop menu and then click "Ok". Wait for it to finish changing the engine.

15- Last step from the previous screen (the one with the tab "Tools") now select the tab "Options" and check-on the last checkbox called "Force use of system installed XQuartz ..."

16-Go back to the tools screen and click on 'update wrapper'. It will tell you that it is already updated, but force it to anyways. it will do its thing for a second and be done. Go ahead and repeat that two or three times. Why? I have no idea, but if you don't it will not work.

Close wineskin and go run the witcher normally and it should now run.

I hate wrapped games. Most don't work without problems. My solution.... I click on the app and select show contents. I then to into C: and Program Files and then the games name directory. That is the PC game at that point. I move this directory out of the wrapper crap. I then run the .exe by clicking on it and "Parallels" opens the .exe and runs the game much better than any wrapper. Parallels is 50-79 bucks, but well worth it if you want to run PC games off your PC. (I have PC too) but it's downstairs and I don't like to use it any more). I played Medal of Honor all day yesterday from a wrapped version that wouldn't run on Mac. Just ran the .exe instead. = )
Tried it.
The Witcher used to crash and shutdown despite steam saying I'm still playing it.
Now I get a black screen while hearing the game start and intro cinematics play in the background.
I don't understand how they can sell the product with this issue being a thing. I shouldn't have to go to Wineskin or Quartz. It should run on its own merit from steam. Ridiculously disappointed.
When I first bought it, it worked fine, then all of a sudden it wouldn't open. My solution ended up being very simple. Open the properties on the game in steam and disable the in-game steam overlay. Now it works again. Takes 2 seconds to do. Try that first before resorting to wineskin. It might work for you too.
If I have to run a winskin game - I open the package, navigate into the C: programs files and run the .exe (windows version) inside the package and run them under Parallels. Works on all the wine skin games I've tried. (torrents mostly) and they run much better than in the wrapper. I'm suprised anyone would SELL a wrapped game as a MAC port. Seems illegal if not totally unethical to sell as a MAC program.
I have the same problem as soon as I click play game it opens then quickly force quits itself
I tried all this and I can't get it to launch. I left a negative review. I hope the Mac audience turns it's back on the game.

I followed those 16 steps and while now Witcher at least launches, which it didn't before, I have a very strange graphics glitch, with horizontal bars flickering through the image.

I fixed this issue by changing the resolution within the games Options page. Then re-changed it back to my monitors native res, and everything worked fine.
I used the method terz1n1 posted here, and it worked perfectly. First time I launched the game, Quartz asked if I'd allow it to change resolution settings. First time I clicked "allow" and the game didn't launch. I got only black screen with cursor on it. Then, I didn't allow the resolution change and the game worked.

Let's hope there will be an update to fix this. Meanwhile, I recommend everyone Mac user having this issue, to send a feedback to Steam.
Sad to say, but I've tried most of the suggestions in this thread, both jumping through hoops with wineskin as well as just downloading a complete copy of the game from GoG. Neither works, I just get a black screen followed by a Windows Error saying that the program encountered a problem. Nothing seems to get past that. Sad, I played this on the PC years ago and really wanted to play it again, instead I'll just have to chase down a refund.

I've got to say, if I'd known that this was just a wineskin wrap of the Windows version I'm not sure I'd have bought it in the first place :(

Wow, sorry to hear that for windows. I had hopes that the GOG alternative would work.
The GOG version worked great for me, once I did some minor fiddling to get it to launch properly. Most common solutions can be found here:

I had more problems with Witcher 2 than Witcher.
