When you lvl up, you're given skill points. Focus on upgrading your steel sword (you won't receive the silver sword until chapter 2) and stats which improve your stamina, damage and dodging.
Also upgrade Aard, it's the spell you get in the Prologue, but it's easy to use and becomes very powerful as you upgrade it. The second spell (the fire spell, I don't remember it's name :/ ) is worth being upgraded too, it is great against certain enemies (giant carnivore plants) but useless against others.
Always collect ingredients from plants, corpses, etc... , as alchemy is very important.
As long as you get familiar with the combat system, the game becomes pure awesomeness.

I'm only about six hours into the game but I'm enjoying it (a lot). My biggest complaint is odd and abrupt music chnages and cutoffs when entering buildings or when loading a scene starts. Makes the game lack a certain polish.
Build Aard for first few chapters then start building Igni. With the right potions you can keep blasting Igni and not even bother using your sword.
