1) Run the game in windowed mode. This seems to help a lot of poeple. You can make the windowed game fill your entire screen, so it's just like fullscreen, using this program.
2) Delete old savegames. If your game WAS running fine and is now crashing a lot, you probably have accumulated too many savegames. The saves are probably located in "My Documents/My Games" and then in a folder for The Witcher. Back them up and delete a bunch. Alternatively, use to manage and delete old savegames.
3) Some users report that forcing Vsync, either through drivers or with the D3DOverrider program (see below for more on that) fixes the crashing.
4) Follow the instructions in this post by beliar.
5) Try down-clocking your video card. Instructions for this will vary by card but a good place to start is in the card's control panel.
6) Disable Realtek's Dolby "sound space expander", if applicable. "
copy and pasted this from a gog fourm post see if any of that helps.

I would personally recommend saving after everything you do, or watching a video on how the first game plays out so you can get into the 2nd and 3rd games which do not have these issues (and where if they are crashing on you, there IS a solution).
Unfortunately, the game still does crash occasionally for no reason, but waaay less than before I started managing the save games.
By the way, the game really does not get along with Garlic, the vampire-repealing item. When I face vampires using it, it's an almost assured crash in a matter of time. I did not get to test this with the other fear-inducing items because I was too tired of getting so many crashes.
I have Crash to Desktop, and I have no Overclock at all.
I reached the old mine, and it permanently crashes all the time when i attack the Kikimoras there, but even when i do nothing.
The thing that eventually fixed all the crashing when I played this game 5 years ago was just deleting all the unneeded save files that had accumulated over the course of the game. If you haven't yet tried that, then you should give it a shot.
