Random Crashes
I played for a bit the other day and all was fine, decided to play a bit more this morning but it keeps crahing then displaying the "witcher has stopped responding" error message,
I tried to diagnose whether its hardware related, but all temps are normal and other games work fine.
The crashes seem to be random as i have progressed to different parts before it crashes, I've tried repairing the game but am stuck for ideas.
Thanks

"Frequent Crashes: The game crashes periodically, while otherwise playing fine.

1) Run the game in windowed mode. This seems to help a lot of poeple. You can make the windowed game fill your entire screen, so it's just like fullscreen, using this program.

2) Delete old savegames. If your game WAS running fine and is now crashing a lot, you probably have accumulated too many savegames. The saves are probably located in "My Documents/My Games" and then in a folder for The Witcher. Back them up and delete a bunch. Alternatively, use to manage and delete old savegames.

3) Some users report that forcing Vsync, either through drivers or with the D3DOverrider program (see below for more on that) fixes the crashing.

4) Follow the instructions in this post by beliar.

5) Try down-clocking your video card. Instructions for this will vary by card but a good place to start is in the card's control panel.

6) Disable Realtek's Dolby "sound space expander", if applicable. "

copy and pasted this from a gog fourm post see if any of that helps.

Necropost, but I thought I'd conclude after a ton of research that if none of the above steps have worked, you are in the same boat as many others who are playing the game using a 64 bit OS. The engine is not optimized properly for newer software and constant crashing is a widely known issue with this game with no real solution.

I would personally recommend saving after everything you do, or watching a video on how the first game plays out so you can get into the 2nd and 3rd games which do not have these issues (and where if they are crashing on you, there IS a solution).

Thank you so much! Deleting the old save games solved the problem almost completely!
Unfortunately, the game still does crash occasionally for no reason, but waaay less than before I started managing the save games.
By the way, the game really does not get along with Garlic, the vampire-repealing item. When I face vampires using it, it's an almost assured crash in a matter of time. I did not get to test this with the other fear-inducing items because I was too tired of getting so many crashes.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Sorry to bother you but how does one do that? I'm not that good with computers

Hey,
The thing that eventually fixed all the crashing when I played this game 5 years ago was just deleting all the unneeded save files that had accumulated over the course of the game. If you haven't yet tried that, then you should give it a shot.
This sucks, I emailed cdp support three weeks ago. no response. So, I spent money on a game that doesn't work and I will not be able to get my money back. The salamanders won this time.
