You dont even need to let them take the goods. Only difference is that way the dwarf blacksmith will offer his services right away when you start chapter 2. If you didnt help the squirrels you have to gain his trust first by helping for example Vivaldi, the dwarf who owns the bank.

And for sword smithing you always need 3 pieces of meteor ore or 3 rune symbol pieces for silver swords.

Is there any point to reforging a sword from red or blue meteorite? You can get the sword Harvall for free in chapter 2 and it has the best attributes of both types of meteorite swords.

Basically can you use these meteorites for something better later on, or should I just sell them?

I personally never used them again after smithing the first time in chapter 1 (chapter 2 for the silversword),. You can get the best silver sword in chapter 4 from a quest and the Harvall Blade from the swamp pretty much lasted me to the end.

Yes. You'll have an upgraded weapon to use meanwhile.
