herbalism
somehow I don't seem to be able to harvest any herbs, did I miss a book, a story somewhere (I am in the outskirts, using the enhanced edition if that is relevant in any way)

oh, I figured it would be direclty linked to the books and dialogues only.
I feel pretty silly now.

No worries! Monster Lore and Herbalism are the ones you need. The first lets you gut the various organs of monsters for alchemy, the other is for harvesting plants.
