That said, I enjoyed Chapter 3+ a lot more than Chapter 2 (Chapter 1 was alright IMO). I believe Chapter 2 is by far the longest; I just finished the game and I beat Chapter 5 and the Epilogue today.
Chapter 2 is a lot of back and forth between the Temple Quarter and the Swamp, and the Swamp is a massive pain when you're lower leveled.
Chapter 3 has far less of that than Chapter 2, and you are mostly in the Trade Quarter and you have a teleport available to take you in between the Swamp, Trade Quarter, and Temple Quarter.
Chapter 4 has 3-4 areas, and they are connected in a circle, so running from place to place is pretty quick.
Chapter 5 and the Epilogue are the shortest, basically only 2-3 areas to run around.
Also, it seems like a lot of enemies stick around during the game, and thus are easier to kill; I was in the mid 30s in Chapter 5 and I was just one-shotting drowners with my silver sword.
And I did so poorly in the W2 tutorial fight that the game recommended I play on Easy. That hurt a lot :'(
im struggleing with combat
im up to the bit where i must kill ramsmeat after the autopsy and loads of men come and kill me i dont stand a chance, is this because im to weak over not completeing side missions?
im thinking of just starting witcher 3 then i mite come back to part 1 some time
or can i trun diffculty down?
I disagree.....ALOT. I'm tired of the same ol' point click click click kill. The combat system is unique in that it depends on timng and makes you pay attention. I'm rather sad they dumbed the combat system down in 2 and 3.
You don't have to do the side missions, but they will give you more experience and importantly knowledge. That allows you to see what monsters are vulnerable to and to unlock formulas.
The side missions also support the main story more than in most RPGs I have found - one of the reasons I like the series so much. There is some fetch type stuff, but they make sense in the context of the actual missions.
The game definitely rewards you by doing them. I pretty much completed chapter one 100% and I just walked through the beast fight. It is kinda cool making Geralt a completely killing machine :) His main job is taking witcher contracts and makes sense to do some farming for ingredient collecting, so Geralt can be always be buzzed up on potions :)
Also, IMO there is no shame in turning the difficulty down if need be.
Pay attention? I don't know if we played the same game, you mean The Witcher Enhanced Edition right? The time interval between attacks is always the same, when you are in combat, you can go to sleep or close your eyes and it will be k, just click at regular intervals of time = make infinite chains as much as combo's allow, action combat system is btr, cause if you have skill, you can fight enemies way higher lvl than you, just keep dodging and dealing few hp damage for few hours but it's possible, here nope.
The only thing you might have to pay attention to (not if you planned your combat beforehand) is alchemy.... When and where to drink a potion, but if you are a trained Witcher you should do it before combat.
I agree on this. The combat system was not that bad. It does look poor and most people today will be unfamiliar with it but simply because we're not used to 1-click combos. The combat in Assassins of Kings is indeed dumb and requires almost no skill. It's just about walking off and onto enemies repeatedly until you can finish them, and that's for heavier NPC's; with the weak ones you simple need to cast a sign and slice a couple of times before they fall dead. The stances make the combat a lot more logical and requires you to pay attention to the enemy you're facing.
I must admit enemies carrying a shield are a bit more of a challange but that's about it.
No, it's not because you've skipped the side quests. So did I, and it took me 5/6 attempts before being able to take them off. You see, the way you can win in this game's crucial fights is by running away and find a corner of a room or whatever can cover your back, then switch on the group stance and make combos the fastest possible way. If you think you're quick enough and have plenty of space for manoeuvres (e.g. in an exterior ambient) walk nearby walls and keep one way free - never get covered and never stay in combat for more than a 2nd combo. Cast a Igni as enemies approach you en masse, after you've found a safe spot where they can't surround you.
