The Witcher wont launch, gets stuck on black screen HELP!

I am trying to start a new playthrough of The Witcher in prep for The Witcher 3. Every time i launch the game it goes to a black screen, flashes a hand mouse cursor then just stays on the black screen forever. I previously played on windows 7 but am now on windows 8.1 desktop. My rig is overkill for this game.

I have launched from all possible locations: Steam library, desktop icon, .exe file, launcher.

I have run as admin both the launcher and the .exe file.

I have gone into properties and played with compatibility mode, compatibility trouble shooter and the low res launch.

I have reinstalled the game and verified the game files multiple times.

Newest nvidia drivers installed a few days ago

I have spent about 4 hours web searching and trouble shooting this and so far come up empty. Any help would be much appreciated

I have the exact same problem, though I don't ever see a mouse cursor. I sit at a black screen forever.

i found the solution on another forum. Go into the properties for the .exe file and run it in windows xp compatibility mode. The game is trying to run with direct x 9 which it cant find for some reason in windows 8. That worked for me

Weird on my Win 7 everything ran sweet till near end game its crashing every load up.

I can still play it just crashes randomly everytime.

i found the solution on another forum. Go into the properties for the .exe file and run it in windows xp compatibility mode. The game is trying to run with direct x 9 which it cant find for some reason in windows 8. That worked for me

Eh, it didn't work. I tried all the way back to win 98, and still got the black screen with the Witcher cursor

"the witcher has stopper working" on black screen? Probably you are AMD user and the problem is the previous driver update, the new one solve the DX9 game problems. win 10

Yes, it's def the need to do a driver update. I did mine, and after a restart, Witcher worked fine

Did not work in XP compatibility mode, but finally worked in Windows 7 compatibility mode! =D
