2. you can make money with contracts / sidequests, bar fighting and playing poker. At the beginning of chapter 2 I had about 4000 orens already... I never had money problems in the game.
this may help you for the books: http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Witcher_library_guide
Old womens also teach about plants, make sure to make them being without any dialogue left, and explore every village.
As he already stated, do as many side quests and talk to people... Doesn't make much sense to play a rpg if you don't try to understand the lore, it's like read a book first page, then run to final to check the conclusion... So why buy the book at first place?
This armor is not necessary, I have reach act 5 without it, then I get a legendary armor for free, I've end up with 35k orens (kings reward included), this particular armor which cost 5k is pretty dam ugly, I do prefer play the entire game naked than wear it.
Few tips.
Gather all materials as you find. (food, bear, wine, flint, monster materials etc.)
Sell all food as you find.
Stock all bear as you find on inn, make sure you stay with one stack with 7+ in your invetory, after chapter 3, you'll not need any bear/wine anymore, so you can sell them all.
Sell all flints as you find, just keep 1 stack of it until you reach act 4, after that you'll not need anymore.
Sell all expensive monster material as you find, some cost 40 gold/each!
On ACT 1 and 2, do not buy any book until you've explored all the area. (you can do it on act 3, since you would have "infinite" money by the time.)
Make sure you enter on every single house, they could hide materials which you could sell, or some book that you could learn for free.
Thing is, I don't even need money ATM, except maybe for buying alcool for potions (on the other side I'm only in act 2. Finished all the quests in Vizima, and clearing the swamp).
The food, I sacrifice it at the altar of melitele, the plant you receive on exchange can only be gotten there. Another thing to maximize money would be to exchange the food (1 oren) for roses (worth 6 orens) in act 2 (gardener by the hospital).
You can also have "infinite" money in act 2: Thaler seems to have infinite money, so just play poker with him.
The book system is just wierd...
Other than that it's a very good game. (Less walk here, to the other side of the map and back again would be nice too)
I don't have a problem with the book system...in fact, i even find it more realistic to have to study a book to know about a plant.
BUT:
It could me esier to get informations about the herbs and monsters...
Don't go to the swamp before having done most of the Vizima quests. Kalkstein will give you a crystal which teleports you to his lab when you use it on a place of power. So you can easily teleport back from the swamp to vizima without hassle. Saves some orens ;) (and time)
BTW: isn't the cost of the ferry to the swamp only 5 orens ?
Yup, but I had to buy a sephira and an electrical storm - among other things. I use the teleports too because it sure does save time, even in Vizima. :-)
Right, I'm done reading. I'm going to play. If it doesn't go right this time Ima just play on easy and bugger the Potions and Bombs lol :-)
Books are the only thing that consumes money into this game, all rest is pretty cheap.
Except for that armor, but you can manage to play without it.
Do not worry about money, keep playing and doing sidequests, soon or later you'll have enough money to get this armor, it's really not needed to have anyway, and it's really ugly.
You didn't need to buy storm, could've wait by meditation or save and load, until rain trigger.
You also can defeat that dwarf on Inn leave and then come back, I personaly think he's much easier than Thaler... (Perhpas bad luck?)
Yes the ferry cost 5 orens.
Indeed, but the dwarf is only available on daytime (you can#t wake him up at night). Thaler works 24h a day and his starting bet is always 110 Orens (though you can only increase by 2 orens per turn).
The odds are a little more on your side when you choose to not bet more money.
Of course it's a gamble system and doesn't means you gonna win, but could improve a little bit more if you do so.
