You already mentioned why: "humans who value power & wealth". That's still their problem today (but I'd throw 'greed' into that description also, they're kind of hand-in-hand).
Enjoy the game!
To be honest, you are wrong with this. As I haven't finished the game yet... I'm just at the end of Chapter II, but I wanted to have some information, whether I should choose a side before the battle between the Order and the elves at the Golems' ground, or should I remain neutral.
But unfortunately you spoiled the ending of the game for me... :/
The best way is to have a save point at a juncture. I duplicate the save and rename it which corrupts the renamed save but it sits next to the working save so you can tell where it's at. Then you can choose a different option and do the other quest lines without restarting from the beginning. That way you can do every path.
However, having just started Chapter 5, I now find that Geralt has turned into a total bigot, spouting all sorts of "kill all the non-humans" rubbish and refusing to believe his "best mate" Zoltan's stories of Order atrocities . I don't mind being forced to choose between two unsavoury options; but I wish the game recognised that I opposed the Scoi'atael, but not non-humans in general (especially after specifically choosing the "the elves are just desperate" dialogue with Alvin in Muddy Waters). I'm going to reload a save just before the Muddy Waters choice, and stay neutral, just to avoid that - even though it feels like a cowardly option.
If you plan to support the Sco'iathel in Witcher 2, you should also side with them in Witcher 1. It makes some things easier for you. But I never liked those rebels. They're really ruthless in the books and arent the good guys you might expect. The Sco'iathel wont appear in W3 (just in one single sidequest), so this wont pay off.
The best gaming expierence and the most coherent story line (imho):
Witcher 1:
Go neutral, choose Triss (not Shani), side with Thaler.
Kill the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Sco'iathel.
Get all three very special reward-swords and the Raven's Armor. Sell everything else before the end and earn alot of income. As a general rule, spare everyone you dont really have to kill.
Supporting the Flaming Rose wont have alot impact on Witcher 2 or 3. Theres only one minor situation in the last act of Witcher 2, its not worth it.
Witcher 2:
You'll take over the special swords, a certain percentage of your gold and the armor.
Kill the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Sco'iathel.
Choose Roche's Path, make love with Triss, dont remove the Blue Stripes tattoo and spare Leto. Same rule: Spare everyone you dont really have to kill, escpecially Sheila. Support Roche in his last mission to get the Loc Muinne Massacre, let Leto save Triss.
If you support the Sco'iathel you experience a totally different game with new insights and different parts of the story. I recommend it, but make sure to finally import Roche's save to W3, since there are no Sco'iatel and related characters in W3.
Witcher 3:
Profit, the whole story arc is coherent. You meet quite a few NPCs of W1 and W2. And dont forget: Kill all ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Sco'iathel on sight. You wont take over any Item or gold from W2, except your precious Blue Stripes tatoo.
The rough and vengeful attitude of the scoia'thel outcasts really makes it hard for me to sympathize with them, even knowing that they're going through hard times. The Order on the other side, especially Siegfried, act with way more honor and selfcontrol.
Because of the decisions I made earlier on the Scoi'atel won the battle in the Swamp Forest making them seem considerably less useless. I think their cause was valid while the Order's cause was only to fight the Scoi'atel and their means went beyond that by doing much more damage then the Scoi'atel were doing to them by means of muder and more extreme racism then was shown from non-humans to humans. I tried to stay neutral, but I thought that afterwards that it is better to pick a side and help people rather than attempt to stay away from conflict.
Problem with the things is it's too much modern politics layover on it making it difficult. Humans racist against elves etc is like a farmer looking down on a king. They also made most of the elves look asian for some wierd ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason....complicating things immensely. Would be very interesting to know who made that decision.
really? many of them have black hair, and cropped scalps, http://f.tqn.com/y/asianhistory/1/W/z/W/-/-/Chinese_Meal_by_Lai_Afong-_c1880.JPG

Even the armour etc is that eastern barbarian type. Elves are known to have predominantly fair hair. Again not all, most of the female elves pass. The half elf looks great and as expected if you see her card.
