Hmm, I could have sworn you used to be able to right click on the game in your library and click on "View CD key" or something, but I can't seem to find it now. If you search the forum there are instructions of digging the key out of the registry once the game is installed. But I'm sure I didn't need to do this since I downloaded the backup for Witcher 2 from Gog without every actually installing it from Steam first.

cd keys are not available while on "free weekend"

no need for a cd key, this version of the game is DRM free

One of the devs stated that CD keys would be available once the free weekend is over. Still haven't been able to get my CD key though.

I don't think we need or are getting a key. drom the game install directory, if you run Launcher.exe, and try to register the game (this is presumably one of the thing you need the key for) it give a "connection with server could not be established: message. I think this means that we don't need to register or get a key for the game. I think they have probably turned off tose servers since the game no longer uses DRM. even people who purchased a retail copy get the DRM removed when the upgrade to v1.5. does this mean that their cd key is now useless and unnessecary? i do not know. maybe someone who has a retail copy might chime in and tell us

patch notes for version 1.5 reads as follows:

Patch notes: •-Removes DRM dependencies
•-Removes CD-Key check
•-Corrects Depth of field and Bloom errors
•-Adds community-based adventures to the game: Blight of the Bogs, Deception, Merry Witchmas and many more

no cd key check mean no need for a cd key for new owners

where do they say this? Don't just say "the devs said this" and not back it up, I have not seen that post, provide a link to where they state that officially

The CD Key is so you can get a backup copy on GOG http://www.gog.com/witcher/backup?pp=4d89d294cd4ca9f2ca57dc24a53ffb3ef5303122 You will note that the GOG version has many bonuses that you don't get on Steam including making of videos, wallpapers, avatars, an artbook and full blown strategy guide. These extras are things I would like to have and are things that are promised on the developers site with the GOG backup copy. I own both games on Steam now but would also like those extras.

Both W1 and W2 have had their CD keys and DRM removed. the games site for retrieving your W2 cd key has been taken offline. And yes, you do get goodies with both games from steam. W2 has more goodies that W1, but they are there. got to the tools portion of your library, scroll down to the bottom and install the "The Witcher 2: Bonus Content" item.

as for the W1 goodies, check your install directory.

there is a digital comic, making of movies, soundtracks (x2), a guide, a world map, and the temeria world map.

the W2 goodies are way to numerous to mention here, but if someone else wants to list them, be my guest

It does actually make sense you can't get a CD key during the free weekend, tbh. I didn't really think through the issue before. Presumably after the free weekend ends they don't want you to be able to keep playing until you buy the game. If you could use the free weekend copy to get a DRM free gog copy this would be a pretty big flaw in the plan. :)

There's some of that in the Witcher, but if you really want it to be a main theme you should go play Planescape: Torment instead.
