I think silver swords can be reforged with runes the same way a steel sword can be reforged with meteoric steels.
I think torches can be useful against enemies that are highly flammable, echinops, drowners and so on. Though I find Igni to be more effective in those cases.
There are 2 silver swords that can only be aquired through quests, the Moonblade (lots of damage) and Aerondight (better chance to inflict critical effects).
-There are two types of runes. The permanent(used for forging) and the brand runes(basically oils), The swords are forged the same way, with the difference being that you use your current silver sword in the process.
-Other weapons are very useful if you don't invest in Signs, like in a combat playthrough. Torches incinerate and kill plants easily. Daggers cause pain which slows movement as well as poisoning, very useful against bosses. Heavy axes cause bleeding, also very useful against bosses.
