This 'Combat' System **SUCKS**
I've recently started to play this. I'm still on the 1st chapter, working my way through the quests. I've killed the bad guys at the inn, and also the 2 guys outside that small house where apparently the children are taken to. I've waited around until my health, etc is at 100%
I've put as many points as possible into Group style.
When I get into the house, 4 guys attack me - and Gerault just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stands there, doing ♥♥♥♥-all, while they cut him down.
No matter what I try, no matter what style I choose, no matter how I try to target any of them - he does ♥♥♥♥-all except wave his sword - he doesn't actually attack anyone. I've tried about 10 times already. What the ♥♥♥♥ is going on? Why won't he DO something??

I've fought enemies one-on-one, pairs and groups - I know how the combat is **SUPPOSED** to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ work. But now he just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stands there like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ imbecile while they kill him. I can't advance in the game.
I reset the difficulty to low - he still does ♥♥♥♥-all except die like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

VERY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tired of this - I want to enjoy the game, not deal with this crap. Are there any cheat codes I can use just to get through this section?

Bah. Not the combat sucks; it's you. Especially when the player jumps into the toilet bowl before posting - into his own sh*t. With quick shots of this sort you can only make a fool of yourself. This is nothing but a mental praecox.

So - you have nothing to actually refute anything I actually stated in my OP - merely a whole load of butthurt. And you accuse ME of mental masturbation....?? Bwaaaahahahahahaha!!!
Come back when you have something.

Did you keep getting hit by those guys? Theres a stun animation everytime geralt get hit. So when he gets hit multiple times by surrounding enemies this stunlocks him, making geralt unable to move completely. The best tip i can give is to attavk once and then run, and then attack again, keep repating this pattern and also dodge if you can so they dont surround you.

I hope this helps a bit. This game is really glitchy so i understand why you have a hard time with it.

There should be a place of power close to the house which should amplify your Aard sign which is helpful in "close" situations where you need some breathing room. Also sometimes the style of combat gets a little wonky, just ensure that it`s set to group style with active pause if you need to change it. If nothing else seems to work then upload you savegame somewhere and post a link to it here.

Thanks to Ciri and to Tommy - with your advice I was *barely* able - after several tries, and by the skin of my teeth - to kill the 4 guys inside the house. I ended up at about 5% health - but I won. Now I can proceed with the rest of the game!
Thanks again!

Glad to hear you were able to proceed with your game.

Combat doesn't suck, although being a console player most of life before recently coming to master race, i find it almost impossible to play this game M+K ... controller fine though,

This game has controller support?

Not officially. You have to have Xpadder I believe. I`m thinking there`s a mod on nexus but i`m pretty sure it`s in German language.

Nice to hear that you beat that part. However, I am very concerned as to why it took so much. Have you allocated points and levelled up by this point in the game? Which level are you? Are all encounters hard for you, or just this one?

I've levelled up a bit, put about equal points into strength, etc as well as the fighting styles (a bit more into Group). I had completed all the quests, fought and killed all the monsters. It was just this particular battle which gave problems - because Gerault would not do anything; he would just stand there, immobile and unmoving, not even attempting to defend himself, far less fight back.
I've fought groups of barghest, drowners, those crypt-monsters, that group of enemies on the bridge outside one of the gates - all without much of a problem - because Gerault would actually fight back instead of going to sleep on his feet.
It was VERY annoying! But I'm past it now. Eventually.

If you keep getting hard times while playing you can always put some points in Igni. It's quite op in this game but, at the same time, fun to use.
So it maybe a good "plan B" if you can't pass a fight later on.

This.

There's also an ability you can get with a certain sword/style that boosts damage against an enemy that has the incineration effect. It was extremely useful in most tough fights, especially the first few encounters with those sentient plants in the swamp.
