Witcher Games Won't Open/Play
Hello. I've downloaded both The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2 yesterday, but haven't been able to play them. I have Windows 10 64 bit and Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 processor. I haven't installed any mods and I have verified integrity of the game files for both games.

For the Witcher 1, the game menu does open, but when I click Launch Game, the menu disappears and nothing else happens.

For The Witcher 2, the game menu doesn't even open at all. Nothing happens.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

After attempting to open the game once, press ctrl+alt+del and see if there is a running process for the game. If so, close it, and try loading the game again straight away.

Otherwise, have you tried running the game in compatibility mode? Or doing a complete uninstall and reinstall?

I uninstalled and reinstalled Witcher 1 and I have tried compatibility mode as well. The game menu won't appear now since the reinstall.

I've opened Task Manager while trying to open the game, but it doesn't show any activity.

Are you able to load the game without steam? Search for the .exe and run that, instead of clicking launch in Steam.

I tried it and the game menu does appear, but when I click Launch Game, it simply disappears and nothing else happens.
I opened Task Manager and something does appear after clicking Launch Game, but only for a second.

Okay, do you have any other programs open? Ie. Anti-virus software, Keyboard, Mouse or Sound software etc?

I had the same Problem with Witcher: Enhanced Edition: I changed the "Riva Tuner Statistics Server" from Low to None for this game.

I apologise for the late reply, real life got in the way, lol. As far as I know, there are no other programs open except for Steam and the folder the game is in.

Hi guys, I am also having difficulty launching the game. More specifically, Steam keeps telling me that it's unable to retrieve the product/CD key. I tried troubleshooting as much as I could (uninstalling/reinstalling the game, restarting steam, restarting my computer, verifying the integrity of the game files etc.). I also tried contacting steam support, and they just kept redirecting me to the community page.

It has been 5 months or maybe 4 months that i have bought this game. Couldnt get a single minute of gameplay out of the game cause of this damn cd key issue. if anyone found a solution to this problem please help out.

I have the same problem. It worked fine years ago on a Win7 system but now I can't get it to work. I try to start it, the mouse cursor gets the 'loading' symbol for one or two seconds and then it stops and nothing happens. If you start it from within steam, the 'Cancel'/'Stop' button goes back to 'Play' and the task manager doesn't show any witcher apps running.

-I've tried running it via the steam library AND the store page
-I've tried running it from the launcher
-I've tried running it directly from the .exe file
-I've tried restarting the computer
-I've tried moving the entire directory into a different partition (and back)
-I've tried running it with -dontForceMinReqs
-I've tried checking game file integrity via steam
-I've tried running it with compatibility modes for any previous windows system
-I've tried any combination of compatibility modes both for witcher.exe and launcher.exe
-I've tried with both applications set to be run in administrator mode
-I've tried clean reinstalling the GPU driver as instructed on the CDPR website

Nothing works. The program seems to close itself within a second of starting, so it never actually opens a window or anything. I've tried so many times 2 minutes of game time have accumulated despite the game never opening in the first place. The biggest roadblock to fixing it is that it gives you no information whatsoever on why it isn't working.

UPDATE:

It's definitely some kind of outdated software issue on CDPR's part.
I've found a workaround to the problem. I installed the "Rise of the White Wolf" mod that replaces some of the game's original data with modded versions thereof and now it suddenly works, without even needing compatibility mode enabled.

In case there is a difference in the result, I specifically downloaded the zip file from nexus and installed it manually. Pity this will likely only work for Witcher 1 and not 2.
