in terms of game settings (in game menu) make sure you have auto saves off , and keep max 6 saves manual to avoid crashes.

shadows medium light low to avoid error in cut-scenes. (rest max)

make sure you add game .exe to NVIDIA app and limit fps to 144.120 . or 60 fps.

dont use steam to run game , run it from .exe

there are also few mods to fix various game glitches if that interest you , you can get them on nexus website.

(there are like 4 fix mods)

other than that nothing else should be needed , unless you want to add more mods to change various aspects of the game to make it more enjoyable, then there are more mods on nexus for that.

You don't need to turn autosaves off, nor do you need to keep only 6 saves. I currently have over 70 saves in my current run. The game doesn't have a crashing problem. At one point, the game supposedly crashed if there were too many saves. Whatever that threshold was, it was probably in the 100s, or else only a problem on Windows XP era hardware. Doubt it's even an issue anymore.

You don't need to turn down shadows or lighting. The game runs fine with both maxed out.

Limiting the frames to 60 via your card's control panel is a good idea because it fixes a hair physics glitch on anything above Windows 8, not to mention running at 200+ fps is complete overkill and is needless wear and tear on your videocard.

You can use Steam to run the game.

You should avoid alt+tabbing out of the game too often. This will eventually cause the game to crash.

You should install the 4GB memory patch found here:
https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/954?tab=files

Supposedly the GoG version has it's own already installed, but nobody knows if the Steam version has it as well. Even if it already does, installing this won't harm anything.

I also do most of this, except the large number of saves and the 4GB memory patch. I do not use any mods at all and keep my saves around 20 (just in case). One thing I am not sure about is Windows 11.
But yeah should be good following Ragnarok's suggestions.

i thought so, i was in a rush to get ready for work so i just read it quickly and replied without thinking.

But i'm going download the 4GB memory patch right now.

so don't alt tab as much, got it.

windows 11 works same as windows 10 for this game (I played on both no issues)

some people mention using windows 7 compatibility mode if windows 11 stops working but I never had it stop working.

to clarify , the light setting in this game is just bloom and on low it looks better for me anyway , you might want to test it to see what you prefer.

shadows medium also look better on medium for me , but again you might want to test it yourself.

Alin guide on steam : All The Mods That I Use For The Witcher I

is quite good mod list if you ever want to check some mods;

I would get the bug fix mods listed there.

turn off auto hdr or hdr since game does not use it anyway.

I would not use any reshade actually since it does have some issues I noticed , although it has some advantage as well in this game.

also if you dont like geralt witcher 1 looks (I never did) and want something more close to witcher 2 looks

there are mods for that as well , I personally liked that mod on page:

https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/images/425

using camera mod as well is nice since original is just not it.

I just installed it, and pressed play. I've not had any issues in 25 hours, i'm mid way through the second chapter. running at 1920/1080p, max graphics settings, windows 10. I also ran the game through on disk years ago, the steam version seams the same as the gog version which also i've not had issues with.
