1 GB save file
My save file is now 1GB and Steam is complaining about it being too big. I have no idea why they needed to make the save files so big, but I don't want to lose my save because of this.

By save file you mean multiple saves? Deleting some of them could potentially free up space, not sure because I got it on gog.

Yeah that's unfortunate, every save of this game weights like 20 MB, so you gotta mostly overwrite saves or try to have 30-40 max saves at any point.

if my post is TL:DR here's the short version:
Go to Witcher game Properties in Steam app and disable "steam cloud"

It's weird to me that steam has cloud save files enabled for all games. Imo, this is mostly needed if a person plays a game on multiple devices, which i do not think happens very often.

And the second reason to have a cloud save is if for some reason, the gaming device breaks or is lost so all the progress gets losts. Which, I think, I also think is a rarity.

There is an option in steam on the game page, when clicking the gear button - properties, to disable steam cloud saves. This should remove the error from appearing. And it shoudnt be a cause for concern, unless one of the above issues is involved.

I want the saves backed up. When I get a new computer I lose all my save progress if it's not.

That makes sense.

The option is not a permanent selection, it's changeable at any time.
So, when the time comes and the new computer is on its way. It's possible to go in to your old computers game save files folder or just in game, clean up the old back up/useless saves to bring the size under 1gb, and to enable the steam saves a again. Which will probably require you open and load your latest save file for steam cloud to do it's thing.

*shrugs* you decide what is best for you.

personally, I disabled the annoying steam cloud feature and kept playing. Like I said, if the exceptions mentioned above do not apply, steam cloud save is negligible risk/precaution.

Where are the save files located? Maybe I can just back them up manually.

  • Deactivate Steam's cloud saving if activated. Shut down Steam completely - it should disappear in the Task Manager.
  • Use the explorer to find your saves. Seek for

    *.thewitchersave

  • Copy your saves to another device, an USB-stick f.i. You never know...
  • Delete all your saves in the folder you found - except the newest.
  • Start the game without steam. Use the explorer to find witcher.exe
and start the game using this .exe file

    Are the unwanted saves gone?

Before you activate Steam cloud again, think carefully about whether you really need cloud saving...
