Is it worth it? anything that makes you happy is 100 % worth it , if you hate it then it would not be worth it. (it all depends on your own preferences )
I played 87 minutes, and I guess I'll finish the game because buying, downloading, spending time in the game and interacting for the game (this discussion entry) is a cost and finishing the game will be more beneficial at this point. Still, I don't recommend it to anybody who didn't play the game.
Waiting for the remake is a better option, but it will be hard on the system because they are using Unreal Engine 5.
I partially agree with what you said here. To deep dive into the franchise, reading is an excellent way to interact, but this is another cost/time to pay/spend.
I can easily say that this version is not worth playing because of the mechanics, GUI and lack of some things I am not able to specify currently but related to being an old game. Even if the story is good, the presentation of the story is old for the time being.
As you said, it depends on subjective preferences and also settings.
Right.
Of course it is better to start with TW1. The question is rather: Can you do it with pleasure and success? Anybody who wants to play this game has to answer a few questions for yourself:
Anybody who wants to play the game because he/she is sure that these points are irrelevant for you then welcome to a very nice oldie. You should know some things before:
The combat system of TW1 is unusual, and many players feel an inner resistance. So you have to learn something before you are able to enjoy the combat. But it's worth while.
Lclick when indicated (Look at the cursor!):

A click in TW1 doesn't mean a single hit, but a combo of two or - later on - several hits. Don't interrupt the combos - by Lclicking at the wrong time.
Geralt is a talent for motion. If you want to avoid damage then Geralt should dodge. You can manage that by double clicking the movement keys W ,A ,S or D. By double klicking "W" he jumps over the heads of his enemies, and after pressing "F" afterwards, he will turn around immediately:

Important: Choose the proper style. For small, quick monsters and humans with bad armor "Fast Style". If you choose the wrong style this will happen:

So you have to change the style:

For details read Geralt's journal (Ingame: Press "J" -> Tutorial).
So take your time. Later on it will look like that:

Not so bad for a game of the decade before last, I think.
The game play is extremely well done, It's a ISO action game. The entire game can be played with just a mouse and never touch the keyboard. How the GUI is lacking when you can play the entire game with just the mouse seams fairly baffling.
It's not the 3rd person play of the later games and It's to bad they removed that from 2 and 3. But if you don't like an ISO action game, then wait. I have a feeling they will also gut the excellent potion system as well. Stacking 6-8 potions and watching things explode from fire is quite satisfying.
It's a rhythm ISO game, It's to bad they are few and far between.
Also i've read the books after my first playthrought and this episode of the game-trilogy has many great reference to the books. If you want to read everything and do every side-quest, it will take maximum 54 hours playtime.
I absolute recoomend it, if you are older than 14 you will enjoy.
I've just started playing Witcher 1 about 3 days ago and have almost completed it now.
I recommend it. I've downloaded and texture and other quality of life mods from Nexus Mods and installed those, game looks decent for 2007.
The combat is a bit meh and the game starts out kind of slow but I'd say Chapter 2, once you get into Vizima, the story picks up.
I like how the story is told in this game and looking forward to starting the 2nd game in the next few days.
You could always wait for the remake of Witcher 1 but that's coming after Witcher 4 so will be a long wait.
But the answer to your question is yes I recommend playing them, this is the first time for me playing Witcher 1 and I'm enjoying it a lot now.
Two, pee'd me off. Controls were different and the keyboard got very cramped. Only a couple of hundred hours in it. Never done more than load it again, before coming to my senses and closing it.down
But then 3 sucked up a couple thousand hours plus v1.32. and 478 on GOTY(468-ish) and complete(10-ish) Upgraded GOTY to Complete.
Not sure how long in v1.02. That's the version from the CD's plus the first online patch to get it to run. I put it back on. Wanted to see if the Willis (White Orchard smith and beehive)glitch still worked. It did but very time consuming.
All in all the lot are worth playing. 1 & 2 fillin the story a bit. And 3 is just a graphical and gaming masterpiece. Well before it's time. That I still play fairly regularly.
I didn't read the books until after seeing the TV series which wasn't bad, but sucked at telling the actual story that 65 million 1, 2, and 3, buyers, are familiar with. And Netflix go and change the story, go figure.
Witcher 3 was polished to perfection by CDPR then Netflix smeared mud on it. Shame they sh*t in their own sandbox the fools.
No accounting for a lack of taste. Theirs or mine, is the only question :-)
Enhanced is a good game. Signs work well, potions too. (They screw them in two. Chair warmers strike again.)
If I have it right, Enhanced is the first answers matter game. (At least the first I played.) Things that happened in Enhanced carry over to 3. Not a lot. just a few lose end. 1 in Vizima and, a couple at Kaer Morhen. Not sure if I should say anything as it'd be classed as spoilers. When I found them I though they were kinda cute filled some gaps in the Enhanced story.
Mind you the same can be said about Witcher 2. A tear your hair out game with keyboard and mouse. But............ fills in the story. And has a part to play in 3. Again not a huge part a gap filler. As I only ever played two one way. I don't know what happens if you make different choices and how they carry over to 3. :-).
Get both, worse thing that will happen is like me you won't need a hair cut for a while, after playing 2.
Cheers Bob.
It's funny when people say the GUI is bad which i don't get at all. The entire game including switching signs and Sword from quick/heavy/group all with the GUI. I love games i can play with only a mouse. (oxen free got mouse only support, yippy!)
The only key i use regularly is the ESC to pause. That is why i love this game, Mouse only works great. I guess at times you might want to hit an Function key to switch signs, but seeing it's just fire or Stun for the most part you can swap them with the mouse normally.
