never can have enough money. Just like grinding for exp, you can grind for money if you want. find a gambler with high money pot and save/load until you win a lot. Fistfight when your bored, sell off misc weapons you gather while out and about, many ways. There are many things you need money for, you might spend 5000 on other things, but then again you might find yourself eventually with 5000 and decide for the better armor.

Me, i go with books and such first so i can get all the info, lore, etc i can find. After that i guess you can save up for that 5000 armor if you want.

EolSunder pretty much hit the answer on the head. I bought the armor in question, and never even knew, 'til now, that it gave an extra pocket!
Anyway, in my opinion, laziness is your greatest enemy in this very busy game. For example,
in chapter 4, I never thought of going into the blacksmith's house at first, but when I did, I talked to his wife and found that she had a quest for me. When I went outside again, the blacksmith
collared me, with a quest of his own, that countered his wife's. You can only complete one of those quests, so you have to decide what's morally right, or what fits the Witcher's personal
mantra, etc. Since each one tells you what the reward will be, that might make your decision a little easier. In any case, I think, (but am not sure), that your choice affects the blacksmith's
subsequent sales inventory. Once you see what he sells, you will know! (When you first encounter him, he has nothing at all to sell).
I,ve been playing computer games since way back before they had any graphics, (text only, I think the game was called "Adventure".), and I think
this is the best one, so far!

Aside from hard liquor to craft potions from and books there is not much to spend gold on in this game. I recomend getting it, but make sure you get your monster entries from the books as well, get the books first then the armour. If you are getting your monster entries then gold comes a lot easier as you will be able to complete quests.

Don't forget to take a sidequest starting Ch. IV for the best Armor of W1. Raven's Armor is nice looking on Geralt plus has few more benefits.
