Report a translation problem
In the awesome walkthrough it was mentioned it would react to magic when you were outside of the detectives house in Vizima, oddly enough, it does. This is before and after the event there.

Neither the walkthrough nor I know why it reacts there.
This isn't accurate. When detecting magic, the medallion can be a helpful way to find spell buff locations on the map. It can also tip you off early about "Raymond," and another major character from Chapter 3.
When detecting monsters, it just gives you a helpful warning when you're probably about to be attacked. Usually enough to chug a potion, apply sword oil, or run.
