Contracts and side quests

Now that I've watched the series I wanted to return to the first game and finish it.

My question is, can I return to side quests and contracts later or should I do them in a timely fashion?

I know some quests are time sensitive but what about the contracts?

Contracts and side quests can't be completed once you move to next chapter, so you should do them before finishing main quest in current chapter.

Quests are not exactly 'time' sensitive. You can spend as much time as you want with any quest. If someone says 'come meet me at midnight', you can meet him/her 2 weeks later if you want. But try to finish as many side quests as possible inside a chapter, because you might not get the opportunity later. Also, some main quests change the environment, so try to do the side quests before doing the main quests. Some side quests will move from chapter to chapter, though. For example, a quest titled 'Wanted', which I think was labeled as a side quest, can't be completed in the same chapter as it was picked up.
