Bonus question: is a red sword worth making early in chapter IV, or am I better off saving the gold for the 5K oren jacket or something yet else instead?
2)The damage stacks. Note: When you level up the styles, each step in the row corresponds to one hit in the "combo". So the first talent on the Strong style, for example, does the bonus damage at the first hit. The second talent does the indicated damage at the first extention, the second time you click the mouse, etc. Eventually, you will be able to string 5 extentions together.
The red meteorite sword(3 red meteors) is arguably the best Steel sword in the game, with the highest base damage. Getting it early is a great idea. However, the jacket is more important. If you are close to that amount, definitely wait and grab the jacket as soon as you can. You will be able to upgrade your jacket once more later in the game, which you should do as well.
Another tip when leveling styles, is that the group style should be prioritized over the other two. Mostly, you fight more than 2 enemies at once and it's a great help. The other styles are mostly effective against prolonged boss battles. Also, the Igni sign and Aard sign are overpowered. They are all you need from Signs, unlike the later games where the rest of them are very useful.
Have fun with this great game!
Your first meteor sword you probably will be able to make is with 3 blue ore. Save 3 red ore so you can make your 2nd sword, which is better than the 3 blue ore. But make the blue ore sword since you can get it earlier. Use it until you can make the 3 red. Pick up and sell the ore after, you'll get a tad bit back from the drop trick. No need to keep it, you can't weld 2 swords at once lol.
The 5k jacket is very nice, get it when you can. Not really much else to save money for, the jacket and making up your swords is main priority. Check your regs/ingredients to see what sells for good money, some sell for 1 each, but if you grind you might find some that sell for 10 each, or 20. Sell off the expensive stuff and keep the cheap stuff to make potions (don't sell your unique stuff which you will need to make mutagens).
When in the inn, always box for a little extra mone, early on its a fast easy 25 money, then 50, etc. Dice also if you want for extra money, if near a blacksmith always sell off your excess weapons you collect, so you can pick up more as you go and sell those.
And yes group styles are most important because fighting 1 vs 1 isn't usually dangerous, what is dangerous is when 4 royal wyverns attack you at the same time. Group style of both steel/silver first, along with your basic stats. Aard and Igni very great also. Powered up Aard is great for stunning strong foes and 1 shot killing them either when stunned or knockdown. Igni is great especially later for sending fire, letting your extra damage when enemies are buring occur. Put bronze into Quen only when you max out Aard and Igni, after your sword styles.
Watch out for level 4 sword styles. If you read them, they say you can perform a powered up move to perform them. Don't pick them if you aren't going to power them up, it takes a while to fully power the special move, and often in combat you have no where near that time. Powered up aard/igni are nice, you can let loose when foes are close, but sword styles, ick. Skip those if you want, or practice using them. They are good when foes aren't close and you can power up, waiting for them to get into range. NOT useful in the middle of combat.
