2. If you follow the path from the landing area during the day to the loggers camp you will find echinops (one of them has a trophy so make sure you grab it).
3. Wait until night in the city (8pm, you will see three red scratches across the icon signifying you are in a danger zone and can draw your weapons at will) and attack the dogs then.
The game doesn't really do much hand holding, this is both a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.
How did you figure it out?
The NPC's/lore told me where and when to find the Alghouls. I suppose the info could be easy to miss. Talk to everyone and read everything is how I went through the game.
Man this game was a real blast when it came out, when I was poor I pirated it in my college days. I have bought the game several times now, giving it to friends and such.
1. Found them more by chance than design.
2. After completing the sewers and handing in the trophy you can talk to the Captain about another contract. Upon reaching the swamp an NPC asks you for an escort, whilst during this quest you are attacked by the trophy and some echinops. One of the first enemies I fought in this area (and died a lot too).
3. During Chapter 1 it does a good job of day means safe (no sign/weapon usage) and night means unsafe (signs/weapons available). No flint? Use Igni to light those camp fires...only at night...
Sure. At least if you didn't get the information from an old woman in the outskirts.
Not really. The book "The Tome of Fear and Loathing, volume II" informs Geralt:
Did you see corpses in the swamp? Sure, near the old sunken tower. Is there any graveyard in Vizyma? A rhetorical question.
Btw., zin0. You should study thoroughly Geralt's journal (ingame "J"); it helps a lot. Concerning the alghoul contract you will find there:
"The alghoul entry in the Bestiary is required to complete this contract."
Yeah i don't remember talking to the old lady in the outskirts or the swamp or vizima about the echinops?
I did search the swamp at night at the far end and didn't find any alghouls. I did kill some alghouls in the crypt though and took what i needed from them, but it wasn't enough to complete the quest.
I do study and read all entrys in the journal, but don't think there was anything about echinops, but i'm pretty sure there was one about alghouls.
"Curses and the Cursed" is the book you are looking for regarding echinops. There are two "old woman" wandering around the outskirts in Chapter 1, that if you give them a piece of food will reward you with a story (either herb or monster lore). You can learn about echinops from them amongst other things. But as a first time player it is highly doubtful you would find this out.
The journel will help by telling you "you need to know this monster lore to complete" but it doesn't tell you were to find said monsters. Instead once you have them in your bestiary that will give you clues like the ones Max mentioned.
